I have a ductile iron head gland on a backhoe cylinder, with a brass or bronze screw-in ring that both holds the seals and wiper ring in place and through which the 2 inch rod goes. It's basically like a gland packing nut. I happened to destroy it in unscrewing it. Does anyone see any reason why I can't machine a replacment out of aluminum 6061-T6? I think it would be strong enough (although I haven't done any caluclations and don't remember how to) and other cylinder heads do come in aluminum.

Hi Charlie,

I think AL would do just fine. My bronze packing nuts looked pretty ratty but have held up well. One was about 1/3 gone on the wiper seal support and it's still holding.
