A friend of mine scored an antique Curtis air compressor at the scrap yard last week, and is looking for information. It is a single cylinder, has a 12" flywheel set up for a flat belt, and the crank case is open to the outside. The tag says:
The Curtis Compressor
Patented Aug. 31 '15 Nov. 30 '15
No. 17051 Size 2 1/2 X 3
Keep Base Filled To Between High and Low Level
Marks Of Oil Gage With Good Automobile Cylinder Oil
Clean Base Out Once A Year
Run At Least 250 Rev. Per Minute
Curtis Pneumatic Machinery Company
St Louis USA

On the head is stamped: AJ6C

The base has Curtis cast on one side, St Louis on the other. The main casting has 4 30 cast on the side. The thing is in remarkably good shape, looks like it was being used recently, seems to pump air very well. Any info or suggestions of where to look appreciated. I have pictures if that helps.

Do a web search for them, pretty sure they are still in business. I have a 2cyl, 2 stage Curtis that is old enough I took it off a riveted tank and had a flat belt pulley, which I machined a groove in it for v-belts(2). It is a very good unit. I have used it for 25+ years. I have put one head gasket,(made it from thick asbestos type gasket paper), on it and cleaned and lapped the valve discs once in this length of time. Got the speed of it at 925 rpms to get a good output from it. Those old compressors used non-detergent oil and the sludge settled to the bottom of the brankcase and was cleaned out through an inspection hole. It probably has babbit bearings and shims on the connecting rod for wear adjustment Probably would be good if you could close the bottom end off to keep out the dust and dirt. Gene Davis

I tried them, they have no records that far back but wanted to know where we got it. I have some good pictures if that helps. Any chance it is really as old as 1915 (pat. date) or 1930 (my guess is that the "4 30" cast into it is a casting date)?
