Log splitter parts

I'm looking to try and build a splitter "on the cheap" Gettin tired of borrowing a friends. Does anyone have any parts the can get rid of cheap? Im lookin for a control valve, pump,and hyd cylinder. Yeah I know all the important parts. thanks, Phil

get a two stage pumpo.. period,,, put a inline filter also (northern hyd)

Phil: Saunter around the local "auto recycling center"--there's more hydraulic parts out there than most people realize. Depending on your proposed setup (and your level of fabricating skill) you can use parts off from old snowplow setups, dump truck lifts, hydraulic tailgates, etc. etc. etc. I've seen some very well-built log splitters with not a single "new" part on them.

Also does anyone know if the Hyd system on my MM-335 would put out enough pressure and flow to work for a splitter?

The force of the splitter is a function of the cylinder size and system pressure. The speed of the splitter depends on the size of the cylinder and the pump flow rate. The bigger diameter cylinder is slower but has a higher force. The kind of wood you are splitting as well as its length and diameter will also affect what you need. I think that a 1500 PSI system would do a decent job if the cylinder chosen is of adequate diameter. We have only evergreens here for firewood, but my 3 1/2" cylinder at 1500 PSI did a good job on 16" lengths of up to about 2' diameter for most of the wood. Bad knots could be a problem. Another thing that helped tremendously was an arm we built to use the cylinder to pull the blocks back off the wedge which had refused to split.
