Placing armature back into starter moving brushes

How do I hold the brushes back so I can slide the armature back into place?

Any ideas?

Hold the brushes in the retracted position with fine wire or monofilament line stretched out around the end bell and secured. Assemble the thing then cut the line and pull it out.

Some I've worked on before had some tiny little holes in the brush brackets that you could slip a small wire (like a paper cliip) into to pin the brushes - slip the armature in and then pull the pins out...

Seems like I also used some small rubber bands one time...

Have a friend who rebuilds starters, etc. He has an aluminum cone shaped device he slips over the end of the shaft. When he slides the case on, the brushes open up as they slide down the cone. Can this idea do something for you?

are you working on adodge starteror one with out a band covering the brushes if so there is a large fiber washer on the shaft at the brush end you place it inbetween the brushes to hold them back when putting in the armeture it stays in there for the next time good luck

Pull the brushes back up into the holder till they just begin to look crooked and let the brush spring press them against the side of the holder while they are still in the holder, slide the armature in place, then take a small screwdriver or something, and gently push the brush into the holder till it slides into place and then button up the rest of it.
