do any of you farmers know of a mfg. of non threaded pipe fittings that can be used to make a farm gate without welding. i have some salvaged pipe from a boiler heat system that i would like to bolt together for some gates.

You can check with the farm store near you in the farm section where they have stall and and pen brackets. they make 2,3 and 4 clamps BUT you will need a bunch and it will not be cheap. They are sort of universal when it comes to size, like you can use a 1 1/4 in pipe and will fitlike 1 5/8 tubing with the same clame. they bolt together .

Bet you spend more on fittings than if you went down to your farm supplier and bought a gate. (I bought a 14-foot one two years ago for something like $70.)

Hi Joe,

Here's one manufacturer of such fittings. Caution though. If the pipe you have came from the innards of an industrial boiler, it is likely to be in accordance with tube and not pipe dimensions. Tube goes by OD and pipe roughly by ID in common sizes. Before you spend money on such fittings, make SURE they will work properly with the material you already have.

Dern -
Now I know something I didn't before. Just hanging out on this site I learn more by accident than if I was trying. I had no idea about the difference between tube and pipe dims. I thought all was measured the same.

Thanks again Rod for the education!

Regards

I had worked in an industrial boiler factory. Yes , tubing is measured by OD. Worked with millians of feet , or more , of tubing.

Hi Shep,

Yes, they are different. Even within some tubing classes they are different. If you are working with anything that is sensitive to actual dimensions, you have to be careful. For instance:

A 1" nominal steel or brass pipe has an OD of 1.315" for all weights/schedules/wall thicknesses.

A 1" nominal size steel or SS tube has an OD of 1" for all wall thicknesses.

A 1" nominal size copper water tube has an OD of 1.125" for all weight types.

A 1" nominal size EMT (electrical metallic tubing) tube has an OD of 1.163.

The above is subject to normal manufacturing tolerances but is great enough to cause problems if you are not aware of the different standards that apply. To make matters worse, once you get into the larger sizes, like 12" nominal pipe for instance, the standards are different still!

I don't have any ready references for such info on-line or I would post it. I am sure it could be found by poking around Google though.
