I was thinking about buying an electric impact wrench to use when I don't want to drag out the air hose. I was looking at the dewalt, but a person told me they had alot of problems with the socket retainer and suggested a craftsman. He said it was the same but had a different retainer. Anyone have any comments on different brands or suggestions? Thanks

we have a 3/4 inch dewalt impact, my father got it from a pawn shop for 90 bucks, it was brand new i believe. i sorta figured it was nice to have but i didnt think it would have the torque that is needed for most stuff. well when i had to change the wheels on my big ford dumptruck i got out the breaker bar, broke them free and spun them off with the gun, figuring it wouldnt have the power to break them free. well when i put them back on i hammered them on with the gun since i thought it would just snug them down, when i went to final tighten them with the breaker bar i couldnt tighten them anymore! it has alot more power than i had expected. since then i have used it many times to loosen tractor lug bolts, axle trumpet bolt and all sorts of big hardware. makes changing hitch balls easy. its nice to just plug it in and work, no waiting for the compressor to pump up, especialy since our compressor isnt real big so it would need alot of catch up time while using a big air impact. it is truley a handy heavy duty tool. its nice to be able to throw it in the truck and go use it anywhere, like when helping friends work on stuff, no need to drag out the compressor.

We used to have a Makita where I worked. It worked good but I find them kind of heavy especially the 3/4" drive ones.

Never had a problem with the Makita.

I have had a Dewalt for several years with no problems including the socket retainer.

I have a Black and Decker at home, and we have a Milwaukee here at work, both use a spring loaded pin for socket retention. They are similar as far as operation, but I think the Black and Decker develops more torque than the Milwaukee---at least, it seems to.

I have a Black & Decker, Industrial. It is virtually the same as the Dewalt, only just a bit heavier duty. I have assembled 5 grain bins with it, and am more than happy with it. They are handy as a shirt pocket. I bought mine at a pawn shop, about 10 years ago, for $35. It's earned it's keep.

I have been well satisfied with the Ingersoll Rand ones. Haven't used the ones you mentioned.
