log splitter not splitting well anymore

Ive got a 5hp 20 ton "Brave" log splitter. Up until recently it has split large oak logs with no problem. Now it seems to be having difficulty splitting larger(18"+) logs. I can help it by starting a split with a mall or an axe while I have the pressure on the log, but I never had to do this before. If I aim all splits directly to the pith of the log it helps a lot, but, as I said before, I never had to do this before. I bought this thing used several years ago and have no instruction manual.

What could this be? The logs I split before were downed trees that had been on the ground for over a year but not cut up . The logs I'm cutting now were just cut.

I believe that your seals have gone out in the cyclinder. This will happen if it has not been used in a long time. They dry up and then when you try to use the splitter, the seal just breaks apart and remains in the cyclinder. This could be a possibilty of why it will not split some logs. Without the seal there is enough pressure for a lot of wood but not near enough for the big wet logs.

I have one of these splitters (I think it's 24 ton), and it splits anything I can get up to it. I routinely split green oak over 24" dia.

I suspect that the pump is shot, although it could be other things as well (eg. cylinder). Northern Tool carries replacement pumps. Look for the Barnes two-stage pump that matches yours.

I assume you've replaced the filter.

The Brave manual isn't of much use, BTW.

I agree with Mark. I have a 24 ton splitter also with the Barns 2 stage pump driven by a little 5 hp BS engine. I haven't found anything it won't split PDQ.

I agree with Shep and Fred.

Green oak can split mean and stringy. We have a tractor mounted splitter and we sometimes have to "persuade" it with the axe when splitting.

And with a small motor splitter I would definetly have a pressure gauge but make sure to protect it. Don't know bout you but we have a tendencey to break things when doing wood and a glass gauge wouldn't last long.

Let us know what you find out. Always good to hear if we were wrong or right.

For about $20 you can put a 5000# liquid filled gage on it...plumbed in on the pressure side to tell if it (the pump) is working okay...mine split most wood at around 700#s pressure on the gage. Some of the control levers have an adjustment for setting the maximum pressure. A gage would let you check this also. L8R....Fred OH

Sounds like to me you are splitting "green" wood and your splitter may not have enough "umph" to get thru it.

The other wood you spoke of sate for a yr. so a large percentage of the moisture evaporated allowing it to split. Consider finding some of the same "seasoned" wood or let the "green" wood sit until "seasoned."
