got a lead on an inexpensive one. Would be handy to have one around. I have some I-beams lying around and and old bottle jack. Thought this could be something I could build over the winter.

I made mine out of 4 inch I beam and used some car trunk springs for the jack cylinder return. I've had it about 15 years and it works great. I also made parts to use it as a brake press for making parts and brackets. I have it set up to use a 6 or 12 ton jack. I rarely need more than the 6 ton to do the job at hand. It presses bearing on and off nicely.

The mast from an old forklift works well as the upright parts...about 5/8" thick (nobody will steal it) and a 50 ton bottle jack from Harbor Freight will take care of the pushing. I found some 10" channel with about 5/8" wall thickness for the cross pieces. Works as well as the Dake 50 ton press that I had...except for no gage...now if I could figure out how to put a gage on the jack...the jack price was around $189 with free shipping...as I recall. Depending on what you plan to use it for, you might consider putting a electric motor and hyd pump on it, you won't regret it. We did on ours. We had found a frame and used an old 5" hyd cyl,hyd pump from a JD combine, and a two way hyd valve. It has got some power.
