Anybody know anything about the 8x10 mini lathes that harbor freight sells. I would like to have something small and inexpensive(less than $500)
Or has anyone seen a grizzly brand lathe, made in china I think. All are cheapos.

I have a friend that has the mini mill and a seperate lathe and the larger lathe frome Grizzly. They are pretty good machines, hes made a few mini hit and miss motors and an air motor. I d like to have one for my shop, till my 10 by 24 Logan gets a new belt. MY big laths has a 27 inch swing and the 4jaw chuck has an 1 1/8 minimum diamter. Alot of the grizzly stuff is some pretty good quality In votech we had a Grizzly Knee mill and its still there despite many oops's.

I got one from Cummins--same basic deal as the Homier. It ran about $400.00 with no shipping as I bought it off their truckload sale when it was in town. So far (about 6 months), it's been a decent little lathe for the money. The cutters that come with it are junk, but you can pick up replaceable insert cutters for less than $20 from MSC or various other places. I've done a lot of little projects such as turning transfer punches, lawnmower spindles, skim cutting dowels, and even a bit of wood turning (messy with all the oil that gets on them, but better than no wood lathe at all) and I've been happy so far.

I have one of the little ones sold by Homier, bought when they were in town, seems like a good little lathe, have been very happy. Harbor freight sells some good little carbid tipped bits for about $5.00. So if you screw up a few of them getting it set up right, don't cost a lot.
Good luck.

Another vote for Homier. Mine was 200 cheaper than Harbor freight. Get the longer bed. It will UPS at about 50 dollars to Colorado. All of these lathes are built in the same China factory. Different color, some little things. I was supprised at the quality...good. go to www.mini-lathe.com Hope that is right, got to learn how to post a link.

Check out this lathe from Homier. Exactly same lathe as Grizzly, made by the same company, but $200.00 cheaper. I've had one about a year. Great little unit. SSlick

Are you all refering to the Speedway 7 x 12" Lathe at Homier? That was the only one I found there. I doesn't appear to have auto feed or thread cutting capabilities, but I guess for 300 bucks you wouldn't expect it. I've been looking for a bench top lathe that will do what I mentioned. Normally run aroun 5-600 bucks at Habor Frieght, but I rather buy one others have experience with. Hate to buy sight unseen on some of this stuff.

I really like their 15" x 40" and would buy it in a heart beat, but it's 3 phase and I don't have it and I can't get 3 phase here.

Hi Richard,,

Don't let three phase stop you from buying that lathe.. You can buy a static phase converter for around $100. that will run your lathe just fine.. You could also use a rotary phase converter that you could build yourself. Or, of you want to spend a little more,, you can buy a Variable Freq. drive,, that will convert to three phase and give you lots of great capabilities.. You don't need three phase power to your house to run 3 phase equipment..

Richard: This is the one I'm talking about--I suspect that the Homier lathe is the same.

I've seen both brands in the stores. Harbor Freight's is really cheap. If you are going to do any work that has to be precise, better go with the Grizzly brand, they seem to be a little better quality.

If you are ever in Springfield, MO., stop by the Grizzly store. They've got a lot of stuff to look at, and they're prices aren't too bad.
