Need projects for welding class

Hello, I am looking for some ideas on items I can weld in local tech college welding class. I would like to do several items that pertain to tools, implements, you name it. Pretty much anything that comes in handy and there might be a market for. I've got a local supply store that said I could put a couple of the items outside to see if they would sell once I was done with them also. One idea I got was a receiver hitch mounted bench vise frame. Just some ideas would be great for a young guy learning. Thanks for any help!

I made a chain rack for the farm shop. Our chains were always on the floor next to the wall, and they'd get tangled, or you couldn't find an end, etc... I used two pieces of angle iron and one piece of channel. Its around 5' wide, and mounted to a ledge that runs around the shop (steel frame building) and to one of the structural supports with several 3/4" bolts. (I followed the 'make it stout' school of design.) Its about 4' above the floor, and pretty simple. A side of one of the angle pieces stands vertical, away from the ledge. Just hook both of a chain's hooks on there, and let the rest hang down to the floor. They're organized, out of the way, and both ends are right there to grab when you want one.

I also built a really super heavy-duty wagon to pull behind the lawn mower out of scraps from other projects and discarded, damaged parts from equipment we've repaired. People would surely like things like that. If you can build things from scrap materials, you can pass the material savings on.

Just a couple ideas. Good luck getting started with your welding career.

Some of my first projects were the triangle stands that are used to hold up dirtbikes. I made heavyduty ones out of 1/2 by 1/2 squarestock. My buddies used to race dirtbikes and could sell them at the track for 25 bucks. I made a mechanics chair, about 18 inches off the ground with a lawnmower seat and 4 casters to roll around on. I always us that when I'm workin on stuff in the garage. A 3-pt hitch mounted drawbar and 2" reciever combo would sell.

I would like to have a small tow behind york rake for my Polaris 4 wheeler, make me one and I will give you $100. I live in Michigan 100 miles north of Toledo. I want it to be 4' wide with an adjuster and be very heavy, bout 150 lbs.

The Lincoln project books are nice but you don't have to buy them on Ebay for $20. You can buy them directly from the Lincoln Foundation for $7 and &7.50. They also have several other books that look good too. I have a few of them.

Go on Ebay, search for "Arc Welded Projects".
I got Vols. II & III a couple of months ago for about $20. Each is about 270 pages with about 100
projects each vol.
It's a Lincoln publication from about 1978.
No one was selling Vol I.??? Library of Congress Catalog # 78-54347

Down here in TX seems like its just natural to make a BBQ smoker as a welding project. I have made and sold several trailer mounted units ranging in price from $800 to $4000. You can be as creative as you want to be. Alot of cutting, welding and time involved. Good luck

May I suggest you contact Lincoln Electric Co.They produced an very fine book on your subject about 30 years ago.It dealt primarily with School shop projects all of which related to useful farm items all the way up to tandem axle trailers.I own a copy but cannot lay my hand on it immediately to give you the title.You might just find one in a second hand book seller on the internet.It is more than a half inch thick and is loaded w/dimensioned drawings.Good luck

How about a heavy set of ramps (car-truck-tractor)for gettin a vehicle up off the ground to work on it? I've always felt better under a truck on my homemade ramps than the flimsy ones you can buy!

Foz, I build a good heavy set myself, much better than the tin ones from the store. The problem with building something like this and selling them is that sooner or later some idiot will overload them, drive up on them crooked or some other stupid thing, and when there is a failure where somebody gets hurt they will go after the builder with a lawsuit. Just the mindset America seems to be in nowdays.

One of the handiest things I ever made was a post-like affair that would bolt to a 3-point drawbar, hook in the top link and have an offset hitch hole to the rear, so the hitch won't turn.

One of the handiest tools I ever made was a vise stand on an old disk blade. I even made it convertable, with a t-post for holding long stock in my bandsaw.

New Welder: A welding class is a great way to save yourself a ton of the "error" portion of "trial and error"! You'll still have lots of the "trial" part though--welding well takes quite a bit of practice. Metal Web News has a bunch of projects in their welding section, and a lot of other interesting info.

Depending on what part of the country you're in..... .barbecue grill; been "ton's" of 'em made from 55 gal drums (simplest) or from "scratch".....
