Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I don't need anything right now got almost 2 complete sets of collets and cutters. Was just curious if it was worth hanging onto.

It just means you have a set of some of the best now. Cutters and collets are still available new but you will need to know the size of the outside collet as there are different ones. I have a old set in a wood box and they say craftsman but were made by greenfield and new little giant cutters work with them. Do a search on greenfield tools. Lot of places sell them.

Greenfield and litle giant seem to be one and the same. They are very good quality and can still be bought new. I needed a 7/8 die and ordered a new one just a little spendy but of good quality. Over the years I have accumuliated enough handels so we have a handel for course and fine up to 1" so we don't have to change dies every time we use a different size. ralph

I have a Little Giant set that I seem to remember buying at an Air Force base surplus sale about '59. Haven't opened it in ages, but I think it has 4-40 to 1/2", and made by Greenfield. It's in a nice light colored wood box.

I'm pretty sure that Little Giant was the name that Greenfield used on their tap-and-die sets. If so, and if still in good shape, it should be good quality and probably worth having for "thread repair".

The taps in most tap-and-die sets are "hand" taps that need to be operated in the classical "quarter turn to cut and half turn back to break chips" manner. Tap a couple of holes this way, and the price of "spiral point" taps ground from high speed steel seems cheap. With the spiral point tap the chips are forced down the hole ahead of the tap itself. Works GREAT for tapping through holes (or holes that can be drilled MUCH deeper than they need to be tapped). Use a spiral point tap one time, and you're spoiled.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if the replacement cutters from anything current would fit in them. I don't need a 1/4" die with an 18" handle but they would be nice on 1 1/8.
