I am considering buying a car hauler to transport my Farmall cub, I've seen ones with metal checker plate decking & I've seen ones with pressure treated wood. I am wondering which is better wood or metal I am open for any & all recomedations, I've posted on this forum before & always got an wealth of information here. Thanks Dave F.

Have you considered "Rumber"? It's 2 x 8 planking made from scrap tires, that resists oil, diesel fuel, etc. Little more expensive than wood, but lasts 20+ years. Had my 18 foot trailer redecked for around $600. Check out their web site @ www.rumber.com

Interesting stuff. Did you have to add more cross pieces for added support? Wood is great, but hard to get good quality. How would rumber look on a porch deck?

My trailer already had 12" o.c. cross members, so no problem. I agree, finding good treated wood in 18' or 20' lengths is getting almost impossible. This trailer came with a untreated painted wood deck that lasted 3 years! Around here there are trailer manufacturers that offer "Rumber" as a decking option. As far as a porch deck goes...I guess if you can live with the color it would work great.

the car trailer i built a few years ago is a wood deck, i like it, it isnt as slippery when wet as my steel truck bed is when its wet. also when ya haul stuff other than tractors, like implements or parts, steel etc it doesnt slide as easily, and you can nail down temporary blocking to keep things from shifting, if you look at the floor of most tractor trailers your will see that nailing blocks in is a common practice when transporting industrial equipment

I prefer wood, it seems a little less slippery when wet and you don't have to worry about scraping all the paint off. If you are buying new, take a look under any trailer you are considering, everything I looked at wasn't painted on the underside.

Metal will probably last longer and be more expensive to replace, will require metalworking skills and welding equipment. Wood will possibly have a shorter life(?) easier to replace at that time though. Will probably come down to 3 things ; price; condition, andyour personal taste for either. If all conditions are fairly equal, I prefer a metal frame and wooden floor, the best of both worlds to me, that is what I have and it is pressure treated pine 2x8 floor boards they are a little more forgiving if yoe make a mistake.
