My Bush Hog found a rock and broke one of the blades. Now I need a tool to remove the 1 11/16 nut to replace it. Sears wants $90 for 1 socket, an extension, and a breaker bar. I see a 21 piece, 3/4" socket set in the Northern Tool catalog for $45. Is this set strong enough to tackle to nut?

I had just purchased a nice looking 3/4" socket set from Central Tractor. Yes it is a cheepy($40.00) , but it still looks nice. All the sockets are 6 point. I've been wanting a good set for years. They never seam to go on sale. So I had to settle for a cheepy. I always herd that it was the ratchets that go bad. Now after reading these post , I should go out and buy a good ratchet. I have not used my 3/4" set yet. Kind of looking forward to useing it, but hope I don't have to.

Bush Hog sells a rugged tool to use with a pipewrench to remove the blade nuts. That tool, a 24" RIGID pipewrench, and a 3' X 1 1/2" pipe has removed dozens of blade nuts for me. Sears sells a lifetime guarantee ratchet for about $60 to replace the harbor/northern stuff, and use the cheap sockets, which are usually OK.

Kevin and all,

I have the same experience as many of you. The Harbor Freight 3/4 set ratchet is junk, even on day 1. However, they sell individual ratchets that are ok and breaker bars that are even better. I replaced the original ratchet with one of each and have been very happy. Still less than half price of a "real" set.

Like one reply said, if I were going to use them everyday I would get a good set at good set prices. But for what I need, the Harbor Freight solution was the right one.

Ended up getting a socket, extension, and breaker bar at a local tool place for $45. Not top quality but not cheap stuff either. Got the first nut to break free but bent the bar on the second one. Rigged up a chain to a come-along from a post in the pole barn to the breaker bar. Still couldn't get the nut to break free. The Bush Hog is new this spring so it shouldn't be rusted. It is painted though. Soaked it with wd-40 and I'll try again tonite with some heat.

Go ahead bite the bullet and buy yourself a good set of 3/4 drive sockets!! In the years to come working on tractors and equipment you will be $$$$ ahead to do so! I have a SK set that I bought in 1973 that I am still using, I have added on over the years always buying good stuff, I have had sockets, breaker bars and rachets replaced over the years always at no cost.

I even use a 1/2 inch inpact (snap-on, not a weak one) on my from northern and have had no problems. they have the 1/2 drive to 3/4 socket adapters also.

Kevin:

I had EXACTLY the same problem about two months ago. Got the 21 pc 3/4" Northern set and am happy with all except the ratchet. It is a piece of junk, but the breaker bar, extensions and sockets are of reasonable quality. I only use the ratchet handle for turning a bolt or nut into position. No tightening, as I value my knuckles!

This set wouldn't make it in a heavy industrial setting, but you can't beat the price for occasional use. Even the carrying case is ok.

Be sure to get the Chrome Vanadium set. It is a few dollars more, but the sockets will be stronger. Also, beware of the shipping & handling charges. My experience is that Northern really stacks it on.

I`ve got a cheap set from Harbor Freight, Pittsburgh I think. No problems other than the junk ratchet, in about 12yrs use. There is a lifetime warranty so I could have the ratchet replaced, but I figured it was easier in the long run to buy a Craftsman replacement. Still makes for a really cheap 3/4" set. Remember Harbor Freight has free shipping versus the high priced shipping from Northern.

I usually like to buy pretty good stuff, but when you get into large, seldom used, sometimes a compromise is in order. I bought a 1" drive set from Harbor Freight-see below-when I got my Ford 9N. Great investment. The ratchet has become a little sloppy, but works. Need the big stuff for tractors. Have also used the sockets with an impact on rare occaisions and they make jim dandy bearing and seal drivers. Can't beat the price.

Don't expect Proto quality, but it is adequate for the shade tree work.

Kevin I bought a cheap $40 3/4 drive set at my local disocunt tool place. I use them on my bush hog and have had no problems. The ratchet wrench did break after about 40 seconds use (which I expected) so I have to use the other wrench which is a real pain to take out and put on the bolt again every 1/2 turn. If I find a good ratchet wrench on sale I might get one. My friend has a shop with a cheap 3/4 set and only one socket has broken over the last 2-3 years. He replaced that size with a "good" brand. I know you get what you pay for, but I could not justify the price of a good set for the little I use it. Good luck Gordy
