Magnets and Welding

I was trying to weld an 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" angle, 1" long to a 1-1/2"x 1" long flat to make a 1" long x 1-1/2" high channel. The flat was held to one leg of the angle with a welder's magnet. The ground clamp was on the vice jaws. The mig gun sputtered and popped every time I pulled the trigger. I put a scrap in the vise and it welded fine. Put the project piece back, and got the same results of popping and sputtering.
I ground off the bad weld, but had just enough weld left to hold the pieces together, so I removed the magnet. Now it welded like normal! Each time I checked the ground clamp for good contact. How can a magnet affect the weld like that? It was right up to the intersection of the two pieces. Anyone got any ideas???

The magnet gave you arc blow. It is when the current produced by the welder is effected by a magnetic field. Happens naturally with high amps and large electrodes, but a magnetic clamp will give the same effect.

Magnetic fields pull on the weld puddle just like the rest of the steel, but the puddle is more effected as it is more "liquid". At least that's my experience. Don't put the magnet near the weld!

Now I'll wait for someone who really knows what's up to answer you.

You didn't have both pieces grounded. The magnet wasn't interfering with the weld, but it wasn't conducting current between the two pieces.

I'm always welding together small parts, but usually hold them together with a magnet 1/2" away from the tack. This time the magnet was completaly under the tack area.
