I was given a old motor driven DC welder. Plate indicates: Lincweld DC 250 MK Welder. Input-32 amp 220v, 3-phase, 3600 rpm, code# 3051, serial# A350500. My first question is how much HP for the motor? I will need a phase converter. Any other information would be appreciated.

The motor is 3-phase. I welded on one of these in the 60's and it was old then but I liked how it worked.

I can't give you an EXACT horsepower for your motor, but according to my "freebie" calculator, it's somewhere between 10 and 15 horsepower. A 10 hp motor is supposed to draw 28 amps at 230 volts, and a 15 hp will draw 42. That's assuming 100% load, of course. Recommended wire size (minimum) for a 10 hp. motor is 8 AWG, for a 15 hp., the minimum wire size is 6 AWG. If it were mine, I would err toward the heavier wire, just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps, and good luck!
