Tired of making a trip to town everytime I work on something, looking for a good source for a prepackaged nut and bolt selection 1/4" to 5/8" inch. Thanks, Mark

If you are willing to pay the price, Caterpillar has a large bolt assortment of their very strong bolts (Grade 8+).

WARNING - for the faint of heart, it is expensive.

The Hardware Kit is Cat Part # 3E6640.
Price is $ 619.71 plus tax.

Includes all coarse bolts from 1/4" x 3/4 up to 1" x 4 Nuts...1/4" up to 1" Washers..1/4" up to 1"

Total of 1755 pieces of hardware..all coarse thread ( wt. 105 lbs ) with a 72 hole all metal bolt bin for free.

This can be purchased from your local Caterpillar dealer.

I have been very happy buying from Hiawatha Fastener, based in Syracuse, NY. They sell to walk-ins and will ship. They have a 20+ page catalog online. They have a wide variety, including DOMESTIC Grade 8 bolts.

Northern tool has one. $60.00 for bolts, nuts, lockwashers and flat washers. It includes the bins too. "grade 5"? Made in China but ok for average repairs.Item 17821-2401

All are good ideas but to make this work you have got to have a good organization system otherwise you will spend more time searching through a big pile only to find 6 of the 8 bolts and 4 nuts etc.
I also spend cold/rainy days sorting and throwing out the junk as I go.
BTW I work in a hardware store with 120ft of fasteners and I still have to get the right stuff usually.It's a good idea just tough to carry through.

Try your local Case/IH dealer. In this area they sell a assortment with a bolt bin for about $150.00. not sure on the price but it works out to be about the same as what they sell the bolts for by the pound and the bin is included at no extra charge. Real nice bin also all steel no plastic.

Only problem is nothing above half inch and nothing longer than 3.

Still makes a real good starter set and you can buy another to expand your selection for the bin and get the hardware included.

Same dealer sells hardware by the pound for $1.53 per pound if you by 3 pounds or more at a time.

What I've done over the years is go to the company that sell ALL kind of fasteners and buy what they call "Floor sweepings" in a five gallon pail and I sort them out when it's raining or snowing or when the old lady kicks me out of the house,I find I get a super assortment and try to do this a couple times a year. Also they will save this stuff for me and tell me when they have it. Jim in N M

And don't forget that everytime you take something apart, keep all the old stuff (as long as it's decent to reuse). I've got a big selection of old bolts, nuts, and washers. The real small stuff I keep separately in those little plastic slide drawer cabinets. Neighbours drop by on a regular basis to borrow (well, to get) what they need and seldom do they leave empty handed.

I don't know about a pre-packaged assortment but here's what I do: everytime I go to Tractor Supply, I gather a few assorted bolts of different sizes and their respective washers and nuts and put them in a plastic bag for weighing at the counter. TSC sells that sort of hardware by the pound and it's the best deal around. They have bolts in grade 2, grade 5, and grade 8. In only a few visits, I've built up my store of most-used bolts to the point where I almost always have what I need on-hand. HTH. Glenn

I bought 100 grade 8 bolts one sunday (7/16") to use on my Rotavator. (normal place is closed on sunday) Those bolts cost me so much greif that there's NO WAY i'd ever buy bolts there again that i have to depend on!!! Some stretched, and some sheared off, talk about no quality control!!

I normally buy all my grade 8 and 5 bolts from my nut/bolt supplier, and the quality difference is huge!!!

I've finally now have all those TSC bolts changed out and "quality bolts" in their place, and my rotor blades are staying tight again!!!

For low quality bolts i do buy some of them from TSC, but for tough aplications NO WAY!!
