Howdy,
I just picked up 32 acres and need a good, but not commercial gas powered extension saw. I've been looking at Stihl and others, but thought one of you might have some experiences with one and might pass it on to me.

Thanks!

Scott

Scott, My best friend Owns/operates the premier native tree farm here in central Texas. He Also does tree trimmings/recovals also. His polesaw of choice is a "Power Pruner" I have seen him cut tree limbs up in trees that were way over the saws limits. This guy doesn't buy a saw, use it once or twice a year and the other 363 days of the year it lives in the barn! This and the rest of his saws see action on ave 2/3 days a week. He has 2 Power Pruners and the rest of his regular chainsaws are Stilhs. OBTW The 4ft extension is handy, But, It will work your shoulders to run a polesaw with it on. Especially standing in the bucket of a Bobcat at full reach trying to operate a saw with that extension.
Good Luck,
John A.

Have sold Stihl and Echo. Echo bought out the original company called Power Pruner. The Echo has a stronger pole than Stihl, less flex. Echo has a drive system that has a little peice in it that will break out, that is what prevents twisting the drive shaft out. Echo has a lot better engine with a lot more power. Another option, Remington make a little electric saw that has a 6ft pole on it, works good. But, the best gas one would be an Echo, you can get fixed or telescoping, take your pick.

I bought a fixed length (not extendable) Echo 2 years ago for about $350 from HD. Works great for me. I did not need the extra long pole as I just needed to cut limbs high enough to get my tractor under when mowing. I could get an extension, 4' I think, but I don't need it.

Here is what I rigged up for less than $100 if you already have a generator to trail behind your frontloader. Remington makes an eletric saw, 12 amps, 16in, 120v, $80 at Home Depot. Clamp or bolt an 8ft 1x10 board to the top of the bucket and this saw will easily clamp to the other end. I used plastic wire ties so they would break before the saw if I made a mistake. A simple eletric hookup,no12,with a switch close to the hyd control. With a little pratice you will be suprised how well this will work. Don`t try to use a cheap saw.

I have a Stihl pole Pruner too and its very good. 2 things to watch for apart from the useful comments below. 1) be sure to keep the inside of the chain guard clean, because the chain is usually pointing 'uphill', saw chippings tend to accumulate inside the guard instead of been thrown out as in a 'normal' chainsaw. 2) Watch out when you are pruning twiggy and/or leafy branches, again it is because the tool is pointing uphill, they have a tendancy to slide down the pole as they are cut off, and come after you!
Whichever machine you choose, good luck and take care.

I bought a stihl, and I love it. It cost about $600, and I think it is 12' long. Has given me no trouble, just be careful about getting the saw pinched about 12' up.

I use an electric pole saw (walmart) that is pluged into my trailered generator. Its simple to operate, and for the amount that I cut, cheap to operate. I figured that it is cheaper to buy something that will work off of a power supply that powers other tools (welder, saws, drills, coffee maker when the power goes out). The only down side that I have encountered is dropping a tree limb onto the cord.

I work as a mechanic for an equipment rental place. We have an Echo pole saw. You can't imagine the beating rental equipment takes (or maybe you can) but the Echo just keeps on running. It is extendable too, no clue how much one goes for.

$600. Echo bought out the company that invented the pole pruner, so it has the most experience, but the others are good copies priced about the same so go with the best dealer. Watch the falling limbs. Even a small limb falling from 12 ft. can kill or hurt.

I bought the top model Stihl- about $600. Love it. Actually prefer Huskvarna saws, but at that time, Husky did not offer the extendable feature. Now Husky does and I think the price is lower than the Stihl. But I find no fault at all with the Stihl pole pruner that I have.

I purchased an Echo polesaw in 1999 and haven't had any trouble with it, just keep the chain sharp, and watch not to pinch the chain. I gave $499.00 for it then, I think they are $599.00 now. Good luck on what ever you end up with...
