Was wondering if the quality of the saws sold at Lowes are the same as for instance the saws sold at a dealer.

Thanks,
Bob

I'd rather buy a Craftsman at Sears than a Husky at Lowes'. Sears has a better reputation for repair facilities and parts availability. They also sell Husky saws.
That said, I think the best bet is to try a dealer first. The prices are comparable and you've established yourself as a customer when it comes time for the inevitable repairs or replacement parts.
And yes, they are the same saws.

The Huskies sold at Lowes are the exact same as the dealer saws.

Part of this marketing arrangement stipulates only the non-pro models will be sold in Lowes and if you check you will not see any xp models. The prices in Lowes are also at or above what the same saw will cost you at a servicing dealer, so where would you buy given a choice? Unless you can do without dealer service, the choice is clear. And if you don`t need dealer service why not buy on-line from a place like Commercial Cutters Direct, Bailey`s, Alamia, Southwest Fastener, or Madsen`s where you will save a bunch of money.

Who can say where this box store marketing ploy will put Husky in ten years but there are a few significant differences between their plan and that of McCulloch and Homelite.

Buying from a dealer does not ensure that you will be serviced properly, in fact I wouldn`t give a pinch of sh!t for most dealers, especially the run of the mill Stihl dealer. Researching dealers is almost as important as shopping price for the average farm or homeowner saw purchaser.

It`s sad that every saw question has to degenerate to empty Stihl is great, let`s bash Husky rhetoric. Stihl and Husky Pro saws are the best you can buy, their consumer saws are aimed at less demanding users. There are some new players from Solo and Dolmar entering the field that look to be excellent quality with good performance and modern features but they lack good dealer support in most areas. I can say first hand that most Stihl consumer products are riding the coat tails of the saws that Stihl built it`s reputation on and that these products are overpriced. Some past and present Husky consumer products fall into the same category but it just so happens that the saws from the 340, 345, 350, 353, and the 359 are excelent saws for their intended purpose and in their price range. I think the 353 is the perfect firewood saw for anyone working in wood mostly less than 18". Excellent build quality at a fair price. It will last many years with normal care. BTW, the 353 and 359 are in a differnt build category than the others I mentioned, really top shelf.

A lot of good comments in this thread. Lowes carries the non-pro models of Husky saws, and the same ones can be purchased at your local Husky dealer. Stihl has not yet made the decision to allow anyone but a Stihl dealer to sell their products. I am sure they have good reasons for this. You can buy Huskys on-line, but not a Stihl. If you have a good local Husky dealer, I hope that you would support him. It is challenging though to find a good one. The person at Lowes answering your questions about the saws will likely know little about them. A chainsaw is one of the most maintenance intensive and dangerous tools you can buy.

Places like Lowes and Wal-Mart are part of what has gone wrong with this country. We all seem to be in a race to save a dollar so we can throw the product away in a year or two to purchase an even sorrier replacement. You always seem to get what you pay for, and if we keep buying junk we'll keep getting more of it. We also whine and moan about our towns local business going away while we only use him for what Wal-Mart doesn't have. It takes guts to carry a Lowes chainsaw into a local full-line dealer to ask him to help you out after you sold him down the river for 10 or 20 dollars. Here endeth the sermon....

Where ya gonna go when you need parts or service for the Husky you bought at Lowe's? Probably to an independent dealer, if he's still in business. It doesn't hurt to spend a little extra to help out the little guy. Lowe's will still be around if you don't buy from them.

According to the guy I know that has to work on them, the Mega Mart version of the old reliable model number Husky saws ARE NOT the quality of the old versions of the same number. He said if you want a good saw (not a bargin saw) go buy a Stihl.

I have always liked Stihl products, but when I wanted to buy a lightweight garden hedge trimmer ( I like to trim my garden hedge frequently to keep it in shape ) Stihl had no such machine on offer, so a few years ago I bought a Mac and it was utter rubbish. The damn thing would never start when I needed it, and when it did it was pathetic. In fact I ended up chucking it away. Lo and behold Stihl brought out a light trimmer, the HS45. I bought one recently and its excellent! Although of course it was twice the price of the Mac. It always starts first or second pull and it cuts through my hedges like a hot knife through butter.

Hi Bob,

That's interesting. I don't have a Lowes near me so I haven't seen 'em. I would guess that if the model numbers were the same, then they would be the same saws you would find at an official dealers. There is a possibility, of course, Husky has some kind of deal with Lowes to market special low end saws to consumers outside the normal dealerships. I hope that is not the case. That kind of strategic miscalculation was the beginning of the end for McCulloch some 20 or more years ago. They apparently thought there was a killing to be made in selling low end saws to weekenders and homeowners in boxes at discount stores. As soon as those purchasers needed any servicing, they would wind up running to the nearest McCulloch dealer. The dealers got mad enough at McCulloch over time because of it that they began dropping the line. The beginning of the end. McCulloch went from near the best to near the worst because of that. If they are still in business at all they no longer manufacture a pro saw, as far as I know.

Arguably, Husky is one of the two best saw manufacturer's in the world today. I certainly hope they don't botch it like McCulloch did. The dealers carry a full range of saws for homeowners, weekenders, farmers and pros. I would not think there was a need to market in the box stores but I am not Husky :o).

McCulloch first did the mass market blunder in 1970, they sold saws through J.C.Penny's and other big department stores like them at retail for less than they sold to us at dealer wholesale price, then they TOLD us we would be the warranty repair stations at their preset factory prices. I suggested that they take their franchise and put it where the sun did not shine!! Sadly it was the true beginning of the end for a great line.

Hi Gene,

Yes, sad but true. I hated to see what was a great American company crash and burn because of their own incompetence and greed. I used to be a big fan of McCulloch. I still have four of their saws in various sizes. My favorite was the PM6 from about 1970. A great little 2 ci saw for trimming and firewood to six inches or so. I still use it occasionally because of it's light weight. But it was my last McCulloch. When I wanted to get a new, larger McCulloch in the '80s, I couldn't find a dealer anywhere. They were not in the yellow pages. Nowhere to be found. I went back to where I had bought the PM6 years previously and he told me the tale you correctly describe. He was a Jonsered dealer at that time and still is. My current high use saw is a Stihl. I love it. With the exception of the PM6, the other McCullochs that I have are just junkers. I will likely never start them again.

It appears that another great American saw company, Homelite, has gone down the tubes also and for a similar reason. I see where both McCulloch and Homelite are still kicking (at least by their websites) but they are limited to only a few low-end saws marketed through discount stores. Stihl and Husky have completely taken the non-homeowner market away from both of them.

Husqvarna is owned by the electrolux group along with Jonsered, McCulloh,Poulan and Weedeater, and Partner. I don't know how long they have been a part of this group, but it seems that any company in this situation eventually loses its uniquness and becomes homogonized with the parent companies product line. If you talk to an independent dealer they all will tell you that mass marketing (ie: Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart etc) is one of the first signs of declining quality. Of course it also means a giant hole in his business. I don't own a Husky so I can't speak to the quality. I do have a Poulan chain saw and it does well as a homeowner machine.

I have a Poulan saw, and it is a piece of junk. Bought a Stihl a couple summers ago and I love it. I keep the Poulan around for cutting small stumps close to the ground. I guess you get what you pay for, the Poulan was $150, the Stihl was around $425.

Stan, I hate to say it but what did you think you could buy for $139 or less that has a funtional two stroke motor, a $10 chain, $20 clutch, and a $20 bar? Not much.

Of the models that Lowes carries, they're the same as the ones at dealers. However, dealers also sell pro models that most box stores don't.
