I know its stretching the purpose of this forum to ask the following question; however, I've recieved a lot of good advice from you folks previously, so here goes. What taxes and licenses should I plan for if I "rent" me and my pickup to families transporting their students back to college? I am fortunate to live in a college rich environment and I think I can make some pocket money by helping mom & dad move junior into the dorm. Junior will ride with mom & dad but the furniture & suitcases will fit fine into my truck. God has also blessed me with a strong back so I can help dad move Junette's computers etc. Are there federal laws/license requirements to consider? I suppose the State will want payment for some type fee. 'Course I could haul the furntiture and disregard the rules but I prefer to keep business on the up-and-up. Any recommendations?

JH

Don't charge a rental fee. Ask a suggested "contribution" to buy gas. Don't get involved with any pianos or hide-a-beds in narrow stairways and have fun. Ed

To do something like that, and be completely legal, would require more permits and paperwork than what you could acquire in the time you have left before school starts. I think the fee for the D.O.T. numbers is somewhere around $750. And you cannot get those numbers until you have commercial insurance, which will cost about $6,000 per year, and is not available from your regular insurance carrier. I know this from experience, just another way that the feds keep the little guy from making money.
But- if the stuff you haul belongs to you, then all the rules change, if you get my drift.

talk to your insurance agent. it might be just considered a hobby and not a true business. just a little extra liability might do the trick.

Here you would probably need commercial liability insurance, probably a D.O.T. for hire license(class B or E?). Probably you will have to be classified as a household goods mover also.
