my 028 sthil has run like a champ for 15 yrs. til this year. Now it bogs down when you put the wood to it. Fuel lines ok,air filter ok,new spark plug, clear vent in fuel tank, clean filter and carb rebuilt and adjusted and the muffler is clean as a hounds tooth! Now if you run it with the air filter off, for testing only,it sprays fuel out the carb! Wont idle very long without dying, but it revs up fine, just dont try to saw with it.Havent pulled the jug off yet but I have a hunch the cyl.maybe scored. You can see some minor scoring on the piston ,but the compression is still good. Broke ring? Cracked piston? Any ideas are appreicated. Thanks, David

i just had the exact same problem with my homelite. i ran it one day then the next day it didn't have the power to cut homemade bread.
i pulled the air cleaner and it was soaked in gas. i ran it without the air filter and it just coughed gas back out the carb. i tried a new plug and fittled with the carb but nothing.
then i happened to run into my brother in law who by chance had just had the same problem with his husky. he took it to the saw shop and the mechanic says "let me show you a trick" he pulled the spark arrester off and threw it in the garbage and it ran fine.
so i went home, pulled my spark arrestor which was completely plugged, threw it in the garbage and it runs like brand new.
the spark arrestor is a small metal screen under a baffle on the output of the muffler. my was held on by two small screws.
hope this helps, it was the best advice i have been given this year to date.

I had the same problem with a Homelite--until I also took out the spark arrester. I think they're required in CA, but I don't live there.

I thought my fuel line was ok until I pulled it off and really looked at it close. If you saw my recent post about a similar problem w/ my 029. that's what my problem was.

By the way. when I ran mine w/ the filter off I noticed a little spray out of the carb too.

Its definitely not the motor. Either a bad job of rebuilding carb or carb is not rebuildable. I say put a new carb on it. Know someone with a good running 028? Put their carb on your saw for a test. Fuel will not spray out like that unless the flapper valves are not working right for whatever reason.
