Top motor electric weed trimmer?Built like a gas trimmer.Seems to me that w/a shoulder strap like the gas trimmers have this would make more sense than having the motor and vents down in the debris field like they are on electrics.I don't need a gas rig and dislike the noise and fuel mixing, but the corded electrics I've tried are"junk" mainly because of dirt/crud etc accumulation and lightweight low quality heads used, along w/light line. With a larger balanced motor you should be able to run the same head types and line the gas units use.

Joe K. Homelite made two trimmers with the motor at the top the ST 30 and the ST 70, that I know of as I have the parts books on them. They were very simply made and look as if they would be well balanced..They also made an ST-80 which was a gas trimmer with the motor at the bottom. (Bet this was a mess). All are Probably no longer made..Roe

Roe Lane, or anyone else. I have a Homelite ST-70 electric string trimmer. The string cutter/guard at the bottom is broken and the string hits it and wraps around the shart. I could use the parts book for this trimmer if you still have it.

I have a ST 80 at home here and am currently rebuilding it. It has been in storage for the last couple of years and will be working as best as it can when done. Yes they are a lightweight and balanced trimmer. Yes they are right in the thick of all the dirt, dust and etc. being down there. Parts are still available for it. It was bought and made in 1983, so even after 20 years, it is still a neat machine. Any questions...let me know.

The only top-motor trimmer I'm aware of right now is the one the guys are talking about. That's right, it's the same unit. Ryobi makes them. They recently bought Homelite and they also make the FS36 and the electric for Stihl.

I have the curved shaft riobi like the one above and I love it. When you grab it by the handle, it balances perfectly level. However, it does feel as heavy or heavier than a homelite gas trimmer that I used before.

Joe,

last year when I bought my Stihl I thought I saw a Stihl electric trimmer with the motor mounted like a gas unit. I don't know if it had a strap on not.

Check with your Stihl dealer.

Joe,

Just checked the Stihl web site. I was right, it is called the FSE 60 I think. Check the link.

I think you have a great idea there. Apparently so does Ryobi. A web search turned up the Ryobi model 137R which is an electric trimmer with a top mounted motor just like what you suggested.
I will try to link you to the site.

They also make a curved shaft model which is usually cheaper if you have no need to get under fences etc.
