Clamp-on thread die...is there such a thing?

My step-son's gearshift on his 861 came off in his hand while mowing the other day. Ford parts guy said it takes a 3/8-24 acorn nut which we got, but it won't go on. The threads on the shaft truely appear to be 3/8-24, but may be a bit banged-up on the end. I tried a regular thread die, but I can't get it started either (the location, on top of the transmission housing, is not the roomiest of places to work).

My question: Is there such an animal as a clamp-on thread chaser that could be installed, then backed-off to clean up these threads? Any other suggestions?

JK The same thing happend to me with an axle after I pulled the bearing. I took it to a machine shop and they used the dye you described. It cost $10, but that is O.K. since if I bought one, I would probably never use it again. Then again if you use a regular dye you may get lucky and the threads will line up. Good luck. Gordy

Hi JK,
We carry those at U.S. Alloys in our ancillary equipment inventory. I have a set but have never used them. I can't say personally if they work well or not.

If you want, you can ask Sharron or Cathy to send or fax you a brochure. 1-800-325-1568.

Steve--

Thank you very much for that info. I will call in the morning for a brochure to be faxed to me.

I've seen those clamp-on type of thread cleaners. They look kind of like those jaw-type staple pullers that you might have in your desk drawer, except they're held closed by an adjusting screw instead of finger pressure. Trouble is, I can't remember where I saw them. Maybe one of those places like Harbor Freight (yuk!)? How about steady hand with a triangular file or Dremel tool?
You said you tried a regular die on it. You do mean a regular 24 tpi die right? If you mean regular as in coarse thread (16 tpi, I think)then...

there are thread chasers for axle shafts, but probably too big. there are numerous types for lug stud repair. there are also thread files that work in a pinch. these aren't tools usually found in hardware stores, you might have to find a snap on or mac tool truck. check out auto parts stores as well.

you can use thread file , I got one at a NAPA store don't know if they all carry them but they can order one. it is a square file with 8 different thread pitches on it, it's good for repairing boogered up threads
