Pex Air lines

Looking at running air lines and drops around the perimeter of my shop. I am considering 3/4" Pex tubing. Stuff seems pretty much indestuctable. Any one have opinions or experiences. Thanks

I AM A LICENCED PLUMBER AND HAVE USED PEX TUBING FOR MANY JOBS IT IS FLEXIBLE AND EASY T CONNECT I USE THE WIRSBO BRAND,PEX IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE COILS YOU SEE DEALERSHIPS USING IN THERE GARAGE TO CONNECT TO MAIN AIR LINES ,I THINK IT WOULD WORK FINE, WE TEST IT TO 120# WHEN WE PIPE NEW HOUSES AND HAVE NEVER HAD A FAILER GOOD LUCK

I work at a large pharmaceutical plant and we use solder copper for our air lines. The high pressure line is 110 psi and the low pressure 50 psi. My home shop is also piped with solder copper and I run 125 psi. So far I have not seen the copper fail yet.

Supply 3/4" and point of use 1/2"

As the post below says, plastic type air lines will explode, if hit. The explosion will result in shrapnel, don't think you want that. The only advantage of plastic, PVC, etc (I don't know what formulation Pex is) is ease of installation. It is not safe. I put about 100 feet of black pipe line around my shop. Since I am slow, cutting, threading, and installation took about 3 days, I think. Probably could have put PVC in in 2 or 3 hours, but I might not be alive to type this.

I would only use black iron pipe because of it's
ability to cool the hot air as it leaves the compressor. This causes the moisture to leave the
air and run toward a drain trap. Moisture is the
death to air tools and a really good paint job.
The water separator works much better with black
iron. Black iron is harder to work with but it
will be a better job.

Plastic may hold the pressure fine as spec'd, but after it ages and gets hit a few times, it weakens. Dangerous if it bursts. I talked with a friend who's a plumber, and he suggested Type L copper, but some recommend against it. My FiL says if you use the right solder it will hold--he says most copper failures are due to using the wrong solder. If anyone has a learned opinion on this I'd like to hear it.

Check out www.tptools.com for good info. Here's their summary: "Use Black Iron Pipe only! We do not recommend galvanized metal pipe, as galvanization can come off the inside of the pipe, clogging separators and regulators. Do not use plastic pipe, as plastic will not help cool the air; and glued joints often separate. Avoid copper tubing, as it is easily damaged; and soldered joints can come loose under pressure (Safety Hazard). Use 1/2" pipe for up to 75 feet of horizontal runs of pipe from your compressor. Use 3/4" pipe for horizontal runs of over 75 feet."

Hi Bill,

I am a firm believer in using copper tube for "normal" compressed air lines in a home shop operating at 175 psig or less. I have used it for many years successfully. I use type L but type M, the thinner stuff, would also be satisfactory. Your FiL is correct. Typically the safe working pressure of the copper tube is several orders of magnitude greater than the soft solder joints. The solder joints are the weak link. Two main soft solders are 50/50 and 95/5. The 95/5 has come in more common use now that lead has been more or less banned from water systems. The big difference is the change in working pressure with temperature. See this link for a safe working pressure versus temperature chart for the two solders. Since compressed air lines close to the compressor can get quite hot, 95/5 would be the best choice for a solder. It's also why copper is a common material used by manufacturers between the compressor pump and the storage tank on packaged units but that you never see solder joints there. Just mechanical ones. That particular tube can get to be several hundred degrees F and solder would not be a good choice for the joints.

I dislike any type of plastic for compressed air. As you mention, PVC is a particular safety hazard, although many have used it successfully. Lucky I guess. It is even illegal and against code in some areas for commercial applications when used for compressed air at any pressure. It is NOT recommended by the Plastics Pipe Institute unless underground or encased in an outer protective casing to prevent flying pieces in the event of failure. As far as I know, Polyethylene does not have that hazard characteristic. However, it is a plastic and I suspect the safe working pressure decreases drastically upon temperature increases. For that reason, caution should be used around compressors with compressed air. Good point about plastic not cooling the air effectively. It could be OK but I would tend to avoid it myself.

For commercial use though, they are right about the steel pipe. That's the best and safest material, especially if all joints are socket welded. It's somewhat of an overkill for the relatively small home shop though.

Thanks Rod, that's great information. The chart showing safe working temperature vs pressure for the different types of solder is very interesting. It seems also that copper has an advantage in that its thermal conductivity is greater than that of steel. Seems it would slough off the heat faster. Thanks for the info!
