I traded in my Honda 2500 psi washer for a 15 hp Kohler Magnum 4000 psi triplex. This babe works great, however I almost regret the swap. My Honda could sit for months and months and always started on the first pull. This New Kohler takes numerous pulls and it is one tuff dude to pull. It wears me out! I priced an electric starter option for it and it's more than a replacement engine with electric start.

I'd like to put a flywheel/ring gear and starter motor ONLY on it and not worry about all the charging coils and such. Any ideas? Anyone with a junk Kohler that will sell me the parts I need?

Actually, it has an internal bypass, if you pull the trigger while attempting to start it actually gets harder to pull. Imagine that! I guess I'm getting old. It would be okay if it started on the first couple of pulls but no dice. Even with no water at all going to it, it will wear me out.

I systematically got rid of all of the American-made small engines in the state fleet and bought Honda gas engines and Yanmar Diesels. That ended all complaints about small engines.

Richard, One thing I noticed with power washers, When you pull them over your fighting the pump making pressure. What I've done in the past, and maybe you could try is pull the trigger on the gun. I locked mine on and stepped on the wand. Even better is to have the low pressure nozzle in. Now when you pull it over your not fighting the pressure buildup.

Oh, it's been decades ago, but I remember an old engine that had a crank handle on it. You would wind it up like a boat winch, then pull a lever and it would spin the engine several turns. I don't remember the make and don't remember ever seeing another one like it. It looked factory built though. If I remember correctly, you wound it up about 20 cranks to get the motor to spin 3 or 4 rounds, but the motor would crank right up.

I remember a Sears riding lawnmower we had when I was a kid that had that setup-I don't know what make engine it had though.

With my pressure washer, it is very hard to start with pressure on the input side. I installed a globe valve between the hose connector and the pump body -- turn the valve off, crank the engine and turn the valve back on. Sounds strange, but it works.
