SIZE OF MOTOR ON A WATER WELL

We have a dozen properties with country wells on them about 50 ft. deep with water coming up the pipes about 35-40 feet making them shallow wells.
I was wondering if the size of electric motor on the wells makes a difference in the volume of water that can be pumped these are 2 inch. wells.
I usually use a 1/2 HP electric motor but was wondering if a 3/4 or even a 1 HP would be a better deal. These are decent wells with good volume of water but was wondering if we could get more weater with a bigger pump and motor???

So the well casing is 50 ft deep but the water is 35' from the surface. That is way into the deep well injector range if your pump is basement located. Around here in places the water flows on it's own out of the casing. Makes a difference if the bypass flow to the injector is properly set even when set up shallow or deep. Can recirculate too much or not enough water. Submersable pumps vary. There are low pressure high volume and high pressure low volume units. A 1/2HP high vol pump will outflow a 1HP high pressure pump in a 45' well. Get into a 300' well then the low pressure pump maynot even get water to the surface.

not sure if i understand your exact problem. your pump should be more than enough to supply household requirements (if in good shape). so then i wonder if you have a well capacity/drawdown problem. take your 900 ft well with 880 ft storage example. it starts off being a shallow well example but with excess drawoff it turns into a deep well example. at a point, no matter what hp shallow pump (500hp even) it will not pump. you can only draw water against gravity so far. its a physics thing. 33 feet under ideal conditions, but much much less in the real world, and it changes with the changing conditions of your suction line, pump, even barometric pressure. after that point cavatation occurs. then you have to go to a jet/foot valve system that actually blows the water to the surface or a submerseable pump that pushes the water to the surface. wonder what size casing is used in your well?

yes - the bigger the pump the more water it will pump. I use a 1 1/2 on my 2" with out problem.

Not knowing your area I can't really tell you the right one - but 35-40 ft is on deep side for a shallow well.

If you have a well that is 900 ft deep and if the water comes up in the pipe 880 ft then it is pumped as a shallow well you can have a well 30ft. deep with say 4 ft. of water coming up in the pipe and that is a deep well.
That is my understanding len

Your right I just never heard the depth of a well expresed that way.

I assumed the 35-40ft was to water - your only 10-15ft to water - definately a shallow well.

You know what assumed means

If the Well and the pump is in good shape the 1/2 horse will pump all the water that the well will produce without any drawdown

I have a deep well with the water down about 50 ft and I have a 1/2 hp pump and it does a good job. 3/4 would be a little better.
