Okay, it's not a tool, however I'm looking at Reverse Osmosis systems for my home. I have a softner, but want an RO for the main sink and ice maker. Lots to choose from 4 stage to 7 stage and $200 to $2000. Anyone have any hints which is a good one that won't break the bank? How much is maintenace costs?

We have the small Ametek unit (now owned by Culligan)that I bought on sale seven years ago for $70. Worked great until about 6 months ago the output went way down. I'd only replaced filters 3 times in 7 years, still on the original membrane. Called tech support and they advised me that the holding tank had lost it's air pressure. Emptied the tank, replaced the auto-type air valve and pressurized to 7 psi - water output came right back up to normal.

I've one of the cheaper ones (about $300) under the kitchen sink. It's been there for over 3 years and works great. Haven't had to do anything to it.

Richard,

We've had a Premier brand 5-stage osmosis filter for the past 5 years. It was @$300 when we bought it at Lowe's. It's worked very well. The only thing we don't like about it that it takes 3-4 gallons of water wasted to make one gallon of R.O. water. That's from the continuous 'washing' of the membrane filter that takes place when it's in operation. Other than that, I'd recommend it.

I was on purewaterplanet.com and they said you can add a permeate pump for 85.00 that will reduce the water waste by 85% and boost the outlet pressure to 90% of line pressure.

Do all RO filters waste water like that?

Water usage probably varies but they all will "waste" some water. The impurities that are filtered out by the membrane need to go somewhere (either that or you'd be replacing the membrane much more often).

Slowpoke,

I don't know, but I imagine that if it has a membrane-type filter, it would have to undergo SOME type of 'washing' to keep itself clean.

I got one from Walmart, works great!! also Lowes and Home depot have them, just make sure you find out where the replaceable filters will be available from after these places don't handle them anymore.
