I was looking on ebay for an auto darkening welding helmet. I know I can get one at TSC for $90. There are a lot of them listed on ebay for less than $50. I can remember a couple years ago it seemed you couldn't buy one for less than $200. Am I missing something? What should I look for in a helmet. Thanks in advance for your help.

I went with my brother to buy a helmet for racing and the salesman said "if you got a $10.00 head get a $10.00 dollar helmet!" I have the excutive auto shade, about $200 and I have never been flashed. How mutch is your vision worth?

Sometimes it pays to buy the better stuff,
othertimes not...

When it comes to your eyes, I'd rather
say my eyes are worth 200-300$, instead of a hundred. :)

I use only Speedglass/Hornell, or Huntsman
helmets. Most anyone in the trade uses
the same.

My Speedglass viewing area is almost 4x4
and I love it. 3 sensors, so I dont
get flashed in out of position welds,
and 9-13 variable, so I can use for Mig, or Tig.

just some things to think about..

The lower priced helmets have a fixed shade and have a one inch view lens, less coverage with the helmet and a low cost headband. The more you pay, the bigger the viewing area, maybe 3-4 shades or even variable shade , better helmet. Some are only solar, some only battery, and some both. Solar only, when the batteries reach the end of life, so does the helmet. Mine from Harbor Freight (W8000, $118 on sale) has 1-3/4x4" view, variable shade, is solar, and advertised estimated life is 5 years. The helmet has less head coverage than my old Huntsman, but I like the head adjustment better. Also the light state transmission (like sunglasses) gets better as the price goes up.
I think in 5 years, there will be many improvements, so a new helmet will be in order anyway.

I had a Harbor Freight "Western Safety" auto dark helmet -- lasted about 8 months, maybe through half dozen uses, then the solar cell/battery went south. Paid about $70.00 for it on sale. Seemed to work fine until problem arose. Fortunately, I always checked mechanism with bright light before welding. In all fairness to Harbor Freight, they took back helmet on return and promptly credited my account for original price of helmet.

Hey Slowpoke, thanks for the informative post. I too have been thinking about an "auto" helmet and you have brought up several good points for consideration that I didn`t even know existed!

J..... I did all the checking about 6 or 8 months ago, even did a demo weld with a top of the line Jackson at an Ag fair. I just couldn't justify $375 for occasional welding projects that take 10 minutes to set up and 10 seconds to weld.
