I am looking at a 98 Chevy with a 6.5 Diesel. I know that the powerstroke, cummins, or Duramax would be a much more powerful engine, but around here those trucks bring a premium. I know the 6.5 had injection pump problems, but were there any other major problems? Can you expect to get 200K+ miles out of these engines? My buddy insists that most 6.5's wont even make it to 150K. Thanks

Personal observations:

Rebuild pump at 90,000 mile increments, replace clutch at same (along with burned flywheel). Overhaul engine at 150,000. Replace turbo and controls/waste gate.

All trucks have their quirks and pet problems. Too many people tie up all there $$ in making a big payment and dont account for the repairs that all mcahines need. I figure about every 100,000 I need to budget $3000 for repairs, regardless of make (and we have all different ones, Ford/Dodge/GM/Navistar).
