I'm thinking about buying a new truck with a 6.0 Powerstroke in it. I have heard about some small problems but of course the dealers won't tell about them. Anyone out there have one and can give me some info on it?

Sorry I went off on the Fords, Our biggest problems were with the ones with 7.3L and a few of the gas models. I know absolutely nothing about the 6L except for the fact our vehicle comptroller will not let us buy any until next year. That is totally fine with me because Chevy HD 2500's will be our standard. They have held up very well with the lowest repair cost. Most of them are going over 100K miles without brake replacement. That is Awesome for loaded service trucks! We have 3 or 4 F450's that cost us a fortune as well. We may replace these with Izuzu?

There have been some problems. One of the first problems to appear was bad engine sensors; that was addressed sometime back. They have also had problems with fuel injectors suffering from internal leaks and bad o-ring seals(also being addressed). Another problem has been chafed wires causing a no-start condition, and there have been other small problems.

A friend of mine in the parts end of the business says to wait until after the first of the year to buy one; he said that if past history is a guide, most of the problems should be solved by then.

We have not even got the dealer plates off our truck and it has been in the shop 3 times. The most concerning is the driveline chatter, along with hard-start, dead pedal and fuel sensor. We ran out of gas twice. This was all before 5,000 miles. They say that the problems have been addressed, only to have us return again the next week! Why are they still selling this truck? We are requesting that Ford buy the vehicle back. Has anyone else gone down this road?

Roy,

The best bulletin board I have found for Ford Powerstroke info is at

Link

They have a "Powerstroke Only" bulletin board that is great for everything having to do with Powerstrokes; they recently started a separate Bulletin board for the 6.0 L engines.

We have about 60 vehicles, around 30 being Fords in my area alone. For 2004 I outlawed any Ford purchases. We had standards with 5 speeds, standards with German 6 speeds, automatics, and a few gasoline with automatics. They are about to bankrupt us!!! Since we buy so many in our Fleet, we can leverage Ford some on repairs, but they are still costing us a fortune.

Here goes the list.
SLAVE CYLINDERS everytime we turn around.
German 6 speed looses 2nd gear syncronizers and cost between $3 to $4,000 a whack.
Gas/Automatics pump the front seal out about every 30 to 50,000 miles and generally cost 900 to 1200 to repair. Both my neighbors with less than 50,000 miles just had the same thing happen and Ford will not admit they have problems. All because Ford reduced the size of the front pump bushing. Generally requires pump, convertor, and seals, and ofcourse the labor.
Virtually no engine problems. Lost about 8 or 10 rear ends just out of warranty. Lost several automatics just out of warranty with Management drivers with NO LOAD. Spent $4,000 on each replacement wiring harness, not covered under warranty for several of them. (Connector problems! and well known!)

Our vehicles are serviced at half intervals, including our Chevys. Yes, we lost 1 rearend and two trannys on the Chevy's. The rearend was to a vent hose coming off and water got in it. One tranny under warranty and one with 70,000 miles on it.

Calvin,
I had heard of some fuel leaks into the base on some early 6L, some even causing crankcase explosions, again, "heard". I had one out last week. Quieter, more power and a much wider power band than my 2K PS. I much prefer a standard box, but I was impressed with the auto in the 250 4x4 I test drove. Left me wanting one all the more. Roy

Here is a good site for the Ford Diesel pickups.

Take anything and everything said on the DieselStop site with a grain of salt. The vast majority of the yahoos posting are: A. Wannabe truck drivers, B. High School Harrys who someday dream of owning a PowerStroke, or, C. Those who have "chipped" or otherwise modified their vehicle, voided the warranty, and now are extremely pissed because Ford will not fix the damage they caused through their own stupidity, or they are actively seeking info on how to hide the evidence of their modification(s), in order to try to pass it off as a factory defect.

Somebody else feels the same way I do.....Have to put chips, then propane, now NO2, just so You can burn more fuel, make more smoke, and blow past a bunch of people that wish They'd go away anyhow.... how silly. Little real maintenance help left there anymore.
