Stihl 029 bar oiler isn't working

I have a 3yr old Stihl 029 chainsaw that has been great. Recently I noticed that the bar oiler is not working. I always top off the bar oil when I refuel the saw. The last time I used it I went through a tank and a half and the oil level hadn't gone down. I use a good quality bar oil, not used motor oil, or straight 30wt.

Suggestions?

Do all of the other suggestions first. If it still will not oil, check the oil pump worm under the clutch for wear or a broken drive tang. While you have it apart, remove the pump and clean the intake hose and fitting at the pump. All else fails, a new pump. It has been very trouble free on this model , though.

How much oil do you expect to use in the 029? Mine averages about 1/2 tank oil per full tank of gas with the adjustment screw on the bottom in full feed position. Everything is clean. Been same since new and hasn't been used much or hard. Doesn't seem like enough oil to me. Joe

I would be loking at the oiler for restiction somewhere. The ones I sold all seem to use most of the tank when turned fully open.
However, 1/2 tank is enough with less than a 20 inch chain. Any problems otherwise are from a dull chain.

The advice below will get you going again. Here is some more advice: Don't use regulare motor oil. It is not formulated to protect your bar and chain. Use only Stihl bar and chain oil. You may have caused your problem. Also since you ran a tank and a half with the bar dry, you probably ruined the chain, if not the bar.

Don't know much about the 029 but my father just had to replace the oil pump on his 038 becuase he had no oil flow. Was costly but so is a new saw.

Have you tried adjust the oil screw on the bottom side? You can adjust how much the chain is oiled that way, my 029 Super has it anyway. Or just go here and ask:

while you have the bar off, start the saw & see if oil is coming thur... also pour the oil out of the oil resevor, rinse out the oil tank with fuel, then check the filter in the oil tank..run a puddy knife in the groove of your saw bar to clean out the bar groove, check to see if oil hole is pluged with daybree(dirt).. probably time to wash the chaps & get the hard hat ready too..
last choice, the worm gear on the oiler is shot$$

I got the same saw. Pull the bar and clean everything out. You'll see a little weep hole, I just ran a small piece of wire through it.
