just have to know someone here has had one apart.
Know it is leaking in the pump, not at a connection in the ground. Must be coming out of the drain hole at the bottom, not at the top outlet. On Woodfords web site they say you can replace any of the moving parts from above. Seemed like it was ok till I backfilled it with sand after letting it be exposed for a few months. Found out I should have used gravel to let it drain. However, could sand work up in the drainhole and cause the pump to not seal? Can I see pretty much what it all looks like by unscrewing it at the top and pulling the guts out? Pump is probably 15 years old. It is the 1" size pipe coming out. Thanks Ret

Do you know when it's leaking? If it only leaks when it's in use, then you're probably right, the drain isn't sealing. And I don't think you can permanently fix this without digging it up.

One thing you should do: The drain is tapped for a 1/8" pipe fitting. You should install a piece of tubing or an elbow and short nipple in the drain. If you don't do this, the drain valve is bound to pick up sand, and there's your leak.

While I am not familiar with the woodford brand, I think all of these hydrants are pretty much the same, you can get all new parts to rebuild one, but my experiences lead me to believe that if there is any age on it, like 15 years, you are much better off to buy a complete new unit.
Sand is not quite the right thing to use at the bottom, pea gravel is better if you can find it, broken brick, cement blocks, small stones, or crushed rock will also work. Have fun. been there, done that.
