The inlet air filter on my obsolete air compressor needs to be replaced. What can I use in place of the original?
Thanks in advance!

I ran a flexible hose out the sidewall of my shop and mounted a small block Chevy air cleaner outside. Now when I change out the filter in my truck it goes into the air compressor can. This way I get a little more out of the elements and I have the same maintainence schedule for the air compressor as I do for my truck. I check the oil and change it every other filter change.

Assuming you are referring to the air filter housing, I just got one that fits a 3hp Tecumseh engine that's used on mini-bikes and the new scooters. It's about the size of a very big coffee cup. It has an almost flat base that I welded on to a short piece of 2-1/4" id pipe, which will mount on a small diaphram air compressor for breathing air. It came with a filter (30727) for $15. The same case and filter at the small engine repair shop was $32. You need to figure out how much air is used by a 3hp engine at the speed your compressor runs to see if the 30727 filter has sufficient capacity.

I found a small round filter at the parts house which fit inside of a 4" PVC pipe cap. It has enough room to let in lots of air, and the air has to come from the bottom up, so it works well where it would otherwise try to pull in dust or water. The base of the cleaner is a plate welded on a pipe fitting.

example is one from a kohler 10 or 12hp
K series motors

I used one from an Oldsmobile I was parting out. Welded a pipe to the housing and screwed it into the compressor head.
