What is the best thing to clean out a gummed up, varnished small carb (5hp Honda engine).

I think it's shellac not varnish that has your carb gummed up. Denatured Alcohol works great.

Auto Zone sells a cleaner that comes in a gallon can (like a paint can). Take the carb apart and remove any plastic / rubber parts, put it in the basket in tha can and leave it for 15 min or so. Comes out clean as a whistle. Can't remember the name brand.

The best I've found is Mopar Combustion Chamber Conditioner found at your local Dodge dealer in aerosol cans.

Saw a mechanic use a can of that aresol brake cleaner the other day and it worked great.

Without a doubt the best off the shelf carb cleaner I've ever used is B-12 Chemtool.I get mine at Walmart.

I always have good luck with lacquer thinner, but
watch out for any plastic parts.

I've cleaned a load of carbs. Used to work for a motorcycle shop. Here's what I learned. If it says environmentally safe, go to the next can. If it doesn't have a big "Warning, Extremely Flamible" on the can, move on to another. I look for the nastiest stuff I can find. Some of the others do work, but it takes many times more material to clean the same carb.

The cleaner at Walmart works good and is only about 80 cents a can.

I always have good luck with aer=sol carb. gumout.
On small engine carbs.

Berkebile 2+2 Gum Cutter works good for me.
Be careful though, it'll eat some plastics and rubber compounds too.
