I have an intake manifold from a tractor I would like to modify from a 6 cyl to a 4 cyl. It's cast but I don't think real hard stuff. Should I preheat and use a nickle rod or a 7018? thanks.

Andy, Brazing would be satisfactory , leave the nickel rod in the box it contracts at a much

greater rate than cast iron causing extreme internal stress leading to cracking.

Use torch and cast iron rod ( usually square but some are round) and proper flux , the

finished weld will be a better weld and will look like the piece that you are welding.

I'd stick with ni rod. I believe I've heard 7018 will weld cast, never tried it myself. If you go through the preheat and slow cool you won't have anything to worry about.
