Can anyone tell me the brand and name/product # of a grease that's made for tools like angle grinders, drills and other tools that DO NOT have an oil tight gearbox? It has to be a grease that does not "channel", but sticks to the gears. I found some Skillsaw lube at the Home Depot, but it seems rather thin and I think Skillsaws have an oil tight gearbox. Thanks for any answers to this question.

I have a 7" Sioux grinder that I've had for 35 years or so...took it in on a job...used. I decided to replace the gear lube in the late 70's as it was displaced from the gears and in all the nooks and crannies. Filled it with gear grease...packed it a little fuller...so it couldn't wander away like before. Fired it up and sure did sound smoother...but just as I was getting ready to put it away, I touched the head (gear cover) and it practically burnt me. Hmmm...took out about half the grease and even poured in some 90 wt. and buttoned it back up. Didn't leak, didn't get hot (warm), still doing it's job...and that's been 25 years ago. Mainly used with a 9" disk to sharpen the bush hog blades with today...but occasionally if needed for really removing a lot of metal...it still knows how. Wonder what ever happened to this company? Anyone know? L8R....Fred OH

Not sure of the brand name, but this used to be called 'moly' grease in industry. Amazing stuff.

Moly (molybdenum disulphide) is great stuff, especially for applications with high PSI steel-on-steel loads. It's a powder that looks like graphite, that's usually mixed with a carrier...could be grease, or silicone for high temp applications. I wouldn't go out of my way to use it on grinders, but if the grease you get has it, it sure won't hurt. It really is great for applications where there is potential for galling.

In those cases where I do not have a specific recommendation for the grease, I use a quality wheel bearing grease recommended for disc brakes. The angle grinders run much quieter with this grease, which I believe is a good indication of effectiveness.

I think Lubriplate has a product especially good for that application.

DaveInMI... Yes, Lubriplate lists a grease that is used for 'leaky gear boxes', #1500. A local distributor will get back to me with minimum order and price, as he does not stock it.
Thanks for the help.

There are a couple of things you can do here. You can put in an inline oiler in your air line or you can oil them by hand with an oil can. Just squirt a few drops in the coupler end of the tooll and the air will blow it through. You will know if you get to much as it will blow through and out and all over your hand. I have an inline feeder with regulators on mine.--deadeye

Hello deadeye. The question applies only to electric operated tools, but I will use your info on my air tools. Thanks.
