Clarke DU8 Drum Sander

Just inherited an older Clarke DU8 Drum floor sander. Never owned/used one. Machine is in fine shape. No "slop" in drum, runs fine.

Here's my question. I purchased paper from a local hardware store of proper size. I put paper around drum and clamp it in. I lift the drum off the floor by tipping machine up on its wheels and turn on motor. Once motor gets up to speed the paper just "explodes" off the drum. Thought maybe was getting caught on something but can't see or feel anything. I never even get it down on the floor to sand anything.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Are you using paper that is meant for a floor sander? The paper I've used on them is very heavy, no way it's flying apart. It's like cardboard stiff. That's my guess.

Rich;

The True Value I got the paper from rents the same sander(s). So unfortunately YES this is the correct paper. Matter of fact so stiff have to run it across the edge of a table to get it to curl a little so goes on drum better.

Should the paper be on the drum as tight as you can get it????

THANKS

Is your DU-8 a 1 piece or a 3 piece drum? What size and part number and where do you get your sand paper? If they have a URL, let me know and I'll check out their paper with a contractor friend of mine as well. I have a 3 piece drum DU-8 so I may be able to help you with this. tim
