Reinstalling the balancer on the front of my crankshaft of my Ford and screwed up - used the ½” adapter instead of the correct 14mm adapter. The ½” did bugger some threads as it started turning free. Stopped right away. Wondering if I got a 14mm tap if I could restore the threads. Or, are there oversize drills and taps I could use?

How many threads did you damage? If it's just a few, take a clearance drill and remove them...bearing in mind that 1 1/2 times the bolt diameter in thread length is maximum for thread strength. And as I recall...theres usually an abundance of length to the threads in the end of a crankshaft. I don't think you hurt anything...you just have to eliminate the few bad threads to get to the good ones. If you only have half the length of threads remaining when your through...clean both threads with solvent, use some Loctite and torque a little less. L8R....Fred OH

Well here is what I would do. First, try to clean up the threads with a tap. If they are damaged much maybe try to extend them a few therads with a bottoming tap or by grinding some of the end off the tap you just bought and used.then use a little longer capscrew. At worst you can put a stud in the hole, screwed in till it bottoms gently , then use a nut on it, this will give you the maximum amount of threads holding. Just go slow and carefully here, you don't want to make it worse, my bet is you will be OK.

The threads could be different in (threads per inch), take your crank to a reliable machine shop before you end up buying another crank.

If you can't find the proper die for your crankshaft, perhaps a thread file would do the trick. Thread files come in 2 different sizes/styles--no.1 or no.2, and between the two of them, there's surely one that will allow you to get in there and straighten the threads that were damaged.

How many of the initial threads have you damaged? Give me a clue and we can probably work this one out. Contact me on the backburner

Al.

I would try to chase the damaged threads with proper size tap.
