We are using a wall clock that has the old style sycro motor, wired to the motor of the compressor. Compressor runs, clock runs, Just set both hands straight up. Works fine.

For gas engines the easiest is to buy a Briggs & Stratton "TinyTach"--When its off, shows hours, while running shows RPM. Simply groung one lug and wrap a wire pigtail around the spark plug lead. There is a cheaper version that only shows hours

Do you know how much a Tiny tach costs?

Cramer & COnrac sell hour meters that run on 120 volts. Just wire up to the compressor motor feed if it's 120 volt. If it's 240 bring one wire from the compressor feed and a neutral to the clock. I just stuck one on my generator.

McMaster Carr has 110 and 220 volt hour meters. Also some that sense the vibration of the machine running to start counting too I think.

Sorry, I was thinking of gas engines for these 2 & 4 cycle meters. Look around flea markets and such. I found an almost new 120v meter for $3. Will put it on my 120/240v generator, with 11hp gas engine. It should work by wiring it across the back of the 120v receptical.
Used to be, one could by "war surplus" clock style hour meters. They work on 6-24v. Sometimes you will find them on old construction equipment.

Northern Tool has hour meters that run off 10 to 80 VDC for $24.99. Wire a socket up to your compressor's motor contacts, plug a 12V "cube" adapter into that (you probably have several around the house), and wire the hour meter up to the adapter. McMaster Carr sells an AC-powered hour meter for $27.00. Wire it in parallel to the motor and skip the adapter bit. You can point and click your way to one of these at www.mcmaster.com. You can probably buy the same thing for less at the local "wholesale only" HVAC or industrial supply store if you have an account or know someone that does.

Too spendy to suit you? Scrounge for an old-fashioned ac powered but mechanically operated desk clock/calendar at a garage sale. You remember -- the kind with the internal drum that "flips" from one day/month to the next. Set the clock to January 1, wire it up to the motor. You'll have to do some mental gymnastics to convert month/day/time back to elapsed hours.
