Whats the going rate in your area for leasing Oxygen-Acetylene tanks? Last time I checked, a few years ago, the going rate was about $275 for five years. I have no idea of how much they cost to fill now.

Due to liability and hydrostatic testing requirements, nobody around here (East Central Maine) will fill a privately owned tank.

I just renewed a 5 year lease on an oxy/acetylene rig for $130. Looking at other prices on this list, I'm feeling pretty good about it...

I just had my privately owned Oxygen tank filled yesterday in Auburn cost me $21.00 for a K sized tank.I also have a leased set of tanks as well as another Co2 tank owned by me.The lease cost me 125 for both oxy and acet, over 25 years ago and the renewal is 125 for every five years.no monthly charges unless I get extra tanks.Cost of Gas is the same for filling their tanks or mine.but My tanks have to be tested every 5 years and there is a charge for that.Buying tanks is definately cheaper in the long run but make sure you are buying legit tanks or you can and will be burned.

I agree with Pete and Slowpoke. I bought mine used. Just make sure they are "owned" tanks, and don't have a firm's name stamped in the ring around the neck. I placed an ad in the local wanted section, and got a great deal on a couple of bottles ($10 each). Another guy had two more he'd sell for $50 each, also a good deal, but I didn't need them. I refill them through Bay Airgas in the Bay Area, and they've been very fair and helpful. No bull from them. Good people. Prices are about the same as those mentioned by the others. It's handy to have two sets of bottles so you always have a full one when you need it.

Tank rights are such a bunch of bull. I bought a set of tanks with a companies name on them at an auction, BIG MISTAKE, I didnt know better at the time. They clam that the tanks belong to them and that I didnt buy the "rights" or I suppose the lease on the tanks and they would not refill them. They claim the lease belonged to the owner and did not transfer with the tanks. The tanks have their name on them so no one else will fill them either. What a crock, are these gas companies selling gas or running a scam??? So bottom line is I bought a set of tanks and gauges, but all I got was the physical tanks, not the lease that goes with them, and I cant get gas for them.

Happy ending is that after a lot of heated debate the gas company decided that sence I bought the tanks, and was raising a stink, that they would fill them for me from now on for what the gas costs and put them under my name, finally. I still think it is bull, they should just sell you the tanks with no ones name on them and let you get them filled by the person with the best price, but I guess they wouldnt make as much money that way. I think it is very wrong the way thay do business.

Anyone else have fun like this with the gas companies???

"Tank rights are such a bunch of bull."

Ok, Shep Va has several tractors and decides to lease one out to a farmer a few miles up the road. The lease terms are $100.00 a year for 3 years but the farmer has to come back to Shep Va and refill the tractor with fuel. The farmer pays the full amount, $300.00 fills up the tractor and signs the lease agreement. A couple of years later the farmer decides to quit farming and has an auction of all his equipment including Shep VA's tractor. A new farmer buys the leased tractor and brings it to Shep Va to be refilled with tractor fuel. The new farmer says I just bought this tractor and I want to get it filled up with fuel for spring plowing. Shep Va says, Hey, that is my tractor..... ..

Tank/Tractor ownership rights are such a bunch of bull? Right?????

If you intend to need an oxy - acty setup around for several years, run the numbers. I think you will find that over the long term, it is a lot more cost effective to buy them outright. Most guys that have the tanks in their shop for a year find that they are so handy they NEVER want to get rid of them.

Hi Bob,

Depends on your location. Here it's $125/cyl plus $5.20/mth rental plus gas, Oxy $25 220cft, Act $35 100cft for rental and $285 to buy.

Watch who's brand you get and see how long they've been in business. You want a long track record here. I just got screwed from my local supplier and can't get one of my cylinders refilled.

I own my oxy/acetylene and mig tanks. I paid $100 for owned oxy/acet tanks with 25' of hose, welding & cutting torches at a garage sale. I have not used it much. I paid $10 for a no brand name 120 cu' tank with non-welding gas at a recycle bottle & can place that had a lot of other junk around. I traded the tank and $70 for a 120 cu' tank full of argon/co2 at a dealer. A recent refill was $42. A smaller 80 cu' tank costs $35 to fill at that dealer, but 75 miles away the same tank costs $20. At a cost of around $15-20 to hydro a tank, I don't see much point in a lease. If you find a tank at a sale, check the date. If there is a star, it's good for 5 years after the date before it requires testing. If there is a +, it's good for an aditional 5 years. (Or the other way around.)
Do not buy a tank with a brand on it because it belongs to the brand owner and you may not be able to get it filled at most welding suppliers. The trade-in tank may have held other gases besides welding gases. Check with your supplier FIRST, before buying a tank.

Hi Bob,

Back in 1970 I got a sweetheart deal on a long term oxy/acet cylinder lease: 25 years for $100 total. Times sure have changed. When the lease ran out, the company no longer offered long term leases. I could only renew the lease on an annual basis. It currently costs me $132 per year to maintain the lease.

I haven't exchanged any empty cylinders in the last few years so I do not have a current refill cost for either cylinder. The oxy is 244cf size. I forget the acet size...not the largest but next to it I think.
