Gas squirtting out of muffler...

I have a 12.5/38" DECK MTD Lawn Tractor. I ran out of gas while cutting. Filled the tank with gas, attempted to crank it back up --- then white smoke spurted out of the muffler and would not crank. I waited a few minutes and attempted to crank it up again. This time I noticed gas flowing out of the muffler. This happened once before, but the gas flow from the muffler was not as much. After it cooled off I put in a new spark plug and it cranked. I don't think it wants to crank THIS time. I'm not mechanically educated. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what I can do? Thanks, in advance for any help and advice you can give.

Mitch

Rather than the carb I would suspect the intake valve being stuck open. This happened once on a Craftsman 10hp we used to have.
Couple of things you can do,
#1 Drain the tank, pull the plug, crank until all the gas is out. Sometimes this will let the valve back down as it was just the pressure of the gas from the carb holding it open.

#2 As in #1 but then put a whole bottle of carb cleaner into the tank with an equal mix of gas, put the plug back in and crank. This is on the assumption that the float valve in the carb is sticking also. Once the mower is running better add more gas to thin out the carb cleaner.

#3 Pull the plug and air filter. Spray a bunch of spray carb cleaner into the carb and crank. Put the plug back, spray another bunch of spray carb cleaner into the carb and crank again. This method is unlikely to unstick a float, but might unstick a valve.

#4 Pull the plug, add a hefty dose of Marvel Mystery oil to the gas and another ounce or so to the oil. Crank until cylinder is clear. Replace plug and crank again. Once engine is running good change the oil.

I would resist fiddling with the carb if at all possible. To those who aren't very mechanically inclined these small engine carbs are very easy to screw up. I've messed up more than a few myself.

Sounds like youve washed some gunk into the float assembly in the carburetor. First, Id pull the fuel hose and drain the tank into a clear container. Replace the filter, or add one if not equipped. Carefully pull the bowl off the carburetor and remove the float and needle valve, noting the way it comes out. Then flush the seat, which will still be in position. You might want to check the float level, maybe even lower it a little, then reassemble everything, Be careful not to over tighten the bowl or any screws you are reinstalling. Id also change the oil and plug. Give the engine a few turns by hand (ignition off, of course) to remove any fuel still in the cylinder. Good luck.
