I have a '79 motorhome with Onan Generator. Last summer it started acting up, surging, misfiring, sometimes going dead. Carb rebuild was no help. I finally figured out that a metal- jacketed wiring harness had gotten down behind the coil and one coil wire was partially unplugged and when you hit a bump or rocked the gen. it would short out the plug wire! Rerouted harness & problem vanished. Hope this helps. Rick

Make sure the spark plug is good or new and the air cleaner is not plugged and change the oil frequently. A fouled plug will cause surging and lack of power. Generator speed is very important as it determines the output frequency. Monitor the output voltage (120 VAC) and frequency (60 Hz)frequently since if these are not correct it will damaged the equipment that it is powering.

Depends on year model...older ones have them some of the newer are fixed. If you do have a high speed adjustment you will have two screw type needle stems.Sounds like it wont rev. up or it surges? Check governor operation and fuel pressure regulator in line between carb and motorhome fuel tank they are notorius for causing slow and no high speed operation. also If it surges at no load rpm check fuel filter.
hope this helps..

thanks guys it is in a 1975 motor home I think is the original one sorry about spelling. (onan) there is one screw on the gen side but I think its the idle as it makes no differance. put in new plugs and fuel pump. if I hold the choke on it will run good. can't see the back to see if there is another screw there can't find a carb kit or a rebult one
