Trying to make a Troy Bilt Tiller Run?

I just picked up one of the older (read good) Troy Bilt tillers, a 7 hp Horse. I can get it to fire by pouring some gas in the cylinder, and once in awhile I can get it to fire by just fooling with the choke, and it will even on occasion run for a minute or two, although not full power. My feeling is that it is starved for fuel, but I took the carb apart and cleaned it, but it didn't seem to help. What about the proper adjustments for the carb? Is the screw on the bottom of the float bowl an adjustment? Any other thoughts on what I might try? Thanks,

MO

Just removed a never used 7HP Troy-Bilt HORSE Tiller w/electric start from storage. Runs like new after tuneup and battery change. Anyone know value?

This is too large for my needs. I want to sell/trade for snowblower and a smaller HP Tiller. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ben and JoeK,

That's what I was looking for, and it confirms what I thought. I was sure that the bottom nut and screw were some kind of jet (power, main, primary, etc.). The carb seems very similar the one on my 9N. The previous owner also said that while the tiller ran good last time he tried, that it had been sitting for quite awhile. I am going to pull the carb out of the cleaner in about an hour and see if it helped. I'll post back later this afternoon with the results. Thanks to all who posted,

MO

As Ben said below, bottom screw is main jet, which screws onto bowl nut tube.remove bowl, unscrew jet from tube/nut.You will find one or more tiny holes in sides of tube near threads, use a bristle from a wire brush to clear them, reassemble. These tiny holes are responsible for the majority of Tec carb problems. If fuel system isn't filtered install one,and never let a Tec sit off season with fuel in carb.

sounds like the fuel pump is not working right. is it the flapper kind in the carb? if so, then replace it.

I believe the screw on the bottom of the carb. bowl is a sediment drain. If your Troy is a 7 hp it will have the Kohler engine. I would also suggest that you check the points setting. If you have further problems post it. I have a 7hp Troy with the manuals. It is an older one-maybe early 80's.----- --Jack

Well, it has a Tecumseh engine on it. Maybe it's not 7 hp? I don't know for sure, and probably should have checked a little closer before I posted. I was just told that it was a 7 hp.

How's your fuel flow to the carb? Is there any trash in the tank?

I thoroughly cleaned the tank and checked the flow to the carb before I tried to start it for the first time. It really flows! I think the restriction is somewhere in the carb - I'm letting it soak overnight in some carb cleaner. Hope that's all it is.

Open that screw 1 1/2 turns. If it hasnt been run for awhile, I would guess you didnt clean the carb good enough.

What engine does the tiller have? Send me an email, I have the service manuals that shipped with mine in the mid 80's. I don't have the tiller anymore, but don't really want to get rid of the manuals....but, I could copy what you need. Have you contacted troy built? I have heard that they were sold, and arn't the company they used to be....but they used to be first class in customer service....might try giving them a call.....

Yeah, that was my first thought, too. Not only were they sold, but I think I was told that MTD was the company that bought them.
