Hi Ya'll,

I was just wondering if anyone had any comments regarding good leather work boot. Which brand is best??

Seems like Red Wing is pretty high compared to Wolverine and Caterpillar boots...

I've had my John Deere boots for almost 3 years, but they are about worn out and the local dealer quit selling them.

Thanks,
Howard H.

The longest lasting, best fitting boots I've had were Knapps. My God it was a tough day when I finally threw those boots away. But as I get older I've learned that the best boots are the ones that fit your feet and your need best. Some are good if you have high arches, some are good if you have bunions, some are good if you spend all day on concrete floors, and some are good if you're a firefighter. I've learned some new brands and ideas from you guys, and I thank you. There's some great advice still out there regarding fit and function...maybe an experienced boot fitter can comment. The best advice I've gotten regarding boots came from an old guy who had probably fit 100,000 pairs. He took a look at my feet, asked some questions about what I did for a living, and I've been a happier person since.

Definitely Redwings. I tried a pair of Wolverines and the uppers collapsed like a pair of baggy socks, besides they felt like they weighed a ton. Caterpillar boots are just a marketing gimmick, the soles are really slippery when working on wet steel. The only complaint I really have on Redwings is that the pulls will detach after a while so I have the shoeshop either reinforce them with extra stitching, or make a new set of mule ears and sew them on.

Red Wings!! I'm hard on boots in the first place, but I do try to keep them oiled and in decent shape. My Red wings cost me $125 and lasted me 3 years before the sole cracked on one and I developed a hole in the other--I still have them too and will wear them when another pair of my boots wear out. If you work on concrete like I do, the thicker the sole--the better off your feet are. I messed up and bought a pair of Justin work boots after the Red Wings--they cost $2 more and seemed comfortable, but only for the first day. They are still in pretty good condition, but actually do something to my feet(pinch a nerve, maybe) that I can't walk for a solid day sometimes, so we don't wear them anymore(just can't bring myself to throw $127 boots away, though). Anyway, that's my 2¢.

Hi Ya'll,

Thanks for all the great advice on boots!

I wish I lived anywhere near a White's boot outlet - I'd like to try on a pair just to see why folks rave on them so highly!

I wear Work@Sport that I get from The local Farm and Fleet. Just looked at the box and it says made in Wisconsin, USA. I'm sure there are boots that last longer but these are the most comfortable I've found at a reasonable price. They do last quite long considering I wear them all day on a farm.

Yup, Red Wings no question about it. Inna ole days useta have to walk to school, sometimes wade snowdrifts over ma head, never a leaky soul. Had to have good tread on them souls cuz it was all up hill, both ways!!! (that was before they put that new raod in). Back down to earth, my vote is for Red Wings, Joe

The key to boots, is buy 2 or 3 paris at once and rotate them everyday. No matter what kind you buy they will last at least 2 or 3 times longer than wearing the same pair 365 days a year. I hope you leave those puppies on the back porch overnite..... .Note: you might not get a Christmas card with most brands. Remenber your feet are where you are grounded. AZ Red

Wishing I had another pair of Whites. As a young man I had a pair of 10" high top corks. Best boots I ever had PERIOD. No longer working in the timber and brush so little need. Current boots are pair of Dickies that been resoled 3 times. Fair boot that has held up well.

Hunting boots are 9" high top from Georgia Boot Co.

I have worn all of them in the past 20 years I guess, but by far, the pair I have on right now are the best yet.

Ariat, pullup ropers.

I have a pair of Wolverine's at home that I have only worn twice, I'll send you if you want them..... ...each time I wore them, my socks end up in the toe. And, I wore three pair of Justin's till I found out they moved the plant to Mexico. Far as I know, Ariat's are still made in the good ole' US of A!

I have worn these ariat's everyday for the last year, and even though they look like crap right now (hyd fluid, motor oil, mud, grease), they are just as solid as the day I bought them, and still wear great.

Mason Shoes are one of the best shoes and companys around. Been made in Chippewa Falls, Wi for ages. Their farm boots are darn near indestructable. Soles are guaranteed to outlast the uppers.

I have to 2nd what Van said about White's Boots they are not cheap, but you will never buy another brand after wearing them. I was a wildland fire fighter for 35 years and wore many diffrent brands of boots untill I got my first pair of Whites. You can't go wrong with them.

Ditto on everything everyone else has said about Red Wing. They are expensive, but they are the only boots I have ever put on that felt good (no breaking in) from the first minute I put them on. I wear mine 365 days a year except for weddings (not my own) and funerals (except for my own).

Comparing Red Wing boots with Wolverine is like comparing a Mercedes with a Yugo! And the less said about Caterpillar, the better.

Red Wing is one of a handful of shoe manufacturers that still make shoes in the US. That alone should be reason enough to buy them.

Red Wing stores are independently owned, so you're helping out a small businessman when you buy the product.

You can get Red Wings in just about any size, although you might have to special order them. You can even order them in mismatched pairs, if you have different sized feet. I have narrow feet, and most big shoe stores and department stores do not carry anything except a "D" width. Inexcusable, but true.

But the real reasons to buy Red Wings are quality and comfort. I've gone through maybe 20 pairs in my life. Red Wing boots are one of the few products that just get better. The new "Supersoles" will outlast the rest of the boot. I can get several years out of a pair of work boots. My wife bought me a pair of their casual dress shoes three years ago; I wear them to work every day and they're still on the original soles.

Same here, Red Wings since about 1982, all bought from same dealer, see him about every three years, he pulls my card when I walk in and can tell everything I have bought from him since day one. Sends me a christmas card every year. First thing I do to a new pair is toss the foam insole that comes with them, that thing hurts my feet. I wear lace up boots six days a week, every week. I figured they cost about 14 cents a day to wear, cheap.
