Welding a tractor frame...what method??

I have an International 184 with a crack in the frame. I need to get it welded but don't know what welding method (brazing, MIG, stick, etc.) is best. I will most likely hire it done.

Next question is should I decide to get a stick welder, how hard is it to learn how to turn out good welds? Just like everything, if I had a mahine and new how to use it I'm sure I would end up with all kinds of reasons to use it.

Thanks for any help.

Hi BB,

Not a good idea to learn to weld on a frame repair. This is a high stress point weld and will break out again if not done correct.

If you want to learn to weld a local Voc-tech school would be the place I would start. All ages show up there to learn so even a older person would not feel out of place. The school is usually cheap, about $100 and have great equipment to learn on as well as the lastest in machines. Instructors are very good.

You could also learn on your own but don't get discouraged as it takes time.

If you go the vo-tech route, your vo-tech instructor might just weld that frame up-as a class demonstration. I got a driveshaft re-yoked and a starter ring gear changed that way when I was in technical school.

Great advide from both of you. The scope of this was too far beyond me so I had a welder come out and do the work. I still have the welding bug and the frame still isn't the way I want it, so maybe I can take those welding courses I have been wanting to take.
