Compressor woes

I have a Sanborn 3 HP compressor with a 20 gallon tank. It doesn't seem to pump at the output it should. Even pumping tires, I have to let it pump up and "catch up" for awhile. It has been doing this for awhile now. I have tried adjusting the pressure valve, but this doesn't seem to make any difference. A friend of mine said their could be dirt in the slide valves in the compressor unit and this would require taking the head off of the unit to clean them. Does this sound right? Any compressor experts out there? Any suggestions appreciated.

I bought a new compressor- 7 1/2 HP- 2 stage- so that I could have enough air to work with. That compressor drove me @#@##$#$$%%%^^^. Finaly the check valve went out, and when I tried to instal the new one, it wouldn`t fit. TMALSS They left so much tubing sticking in to the valve that the passages in the valve were shut off and the air would be super heated enough to make the spring and disk dissapear. Cut back the tube and presto.

Could be a stuck check valve or a broken reed valve or spring. The check valve is easy enough to inspect. Checking the valves inside the compressor would require opening up the pump. You could take off the air filter and see what you can find out from there. You might see a lot of dirt buildup that could be propping open one of the valves. Try running it without an air filter and see if you get any air coming back out at you from the intake. Sure sign of a broken valve. If it is a broken valve, you are not doing you bore or piston any favors by running it like this, so don't let it go too long.

I had a neighbor with the same problem, he never drained the water out of it and what he had was a 20 gallon tank with 15 gallons of water in it. Hopefully your's isn't the same. Plugged air intake maybe?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I don't have a water problem as I drain the tank regularily. I will inspect the check valve and air intake for starters.
