Nowdays our PC's count as a tool, right? A while back I discovered how to use those charachters that don't appear on our keyboards, but are needed from time to time, like fractions, the degree symbol, etc. Here's how to do it:

1. Click on "START" at the bottom of your screen
2. Click on "Run" in the box that pops up
3. Type "charmap" (without the " ")
4. Click OK
5. If it is installed on your PC, a box will pop up with all of these charachters in it.
6. Click on the charachter you want to use
7. Click on "Select"
8. Click on "Copy"
9. Now go back to where you want to put the charachter, place your cursor there and paste the charachter in. There are a couple of ways to paste. You can either click your right mouse button and then click on paste, or instead of using the mouse at all you can press the "CTRL" key, and while holding it down pres the "V" key. CTRL "V" is the same as "PASTE", CRTL "C" is the same as "COPY", and CRTL "X" is the same as "DELETE"

o, have fun, e safe, use common , and don't forget to put an ice in your drink when it's 100 outside.

Thanks guys! I guess whenever I saw someone using those characters I just thought they had a fancy, high priced computer. Always kind of wondered why they never put them somewhere on a keyboard anyway--they put numbers on here twice and the whole lot of "F" keys that I use only a couple of anyway. Anyway, thanks again.

John and Bob -- thanks for the info. I know how to get those characters out of a word processor, but did not know they could easily be put in other programs also. I also knew about the codes, but no longer have a list of them.

many of the common ones can also be done from the numeric key pad and the alt key...

 degree sign = ALT+0176
 one fourth = ALT+0188
 one half = ALT+0189
 three fourth = ALT+0190
 cent sign = ALT+0162
 square = ALT+0178
 cube = ALT+0179
 plus/minus = ALT+0177

just hold down the alt key and punch in the numeric on the "keypad" little shorter and quicker for me

Thanks John, I'll print your response and tape it to my desk where most of my brain is already taped.
