I have a wheel bearing packer that appears designed to accept a grease cartridge. However, only the base will unscrew making it impossible to insert a cartridge. The only I.D. on it is Croft Manufacturing, L.A., Cal. Does anyone have info on this tool? Thanks in advance, Pete

I had a similar bearing packer. The body of the thing was in reality a cartridge type grease gun.
To load it, pull the plunger handle out and lock
the slot in the shaft in the keyhole. Unscrew the barrel from the base and replace the cartridge and reassemble. Release the plunger before final tightening to purge any air and you are in business. Total elapsed time one minute. The barrel might have been overtightened so it seems like it won't come apart. In such a case use a strap wrench or a chain type pipe wrench so you don't damage the barrel. Hand tight should be sufficient. Ed

Farmered, thanks for your response. I finally got it loaded with a cartridge but the top won't unscrew from the barrel with the methods I tried. I need to get a strap wrench as you suggest. Thanks again, Pete

Pete, most every one I've seen had a grease zerk on one end. I'm trying to envision what a bearing packer that uses a grease cartridge would look like, and all I can see is "big". Check both ends of the center tube that goes through the cones, chances are you'll see threads where the zerk should be.

Bob, thanks for your response. The main tube is threaded to the base that is meant to be screwed to a bench. A long plunger tube goes through the middle of the grease, forcing it up into the cone and bearing. So far I have not been able to separate the main tube and plunger or figure out how to charge it with grease, except maybe by hand. There aren't any zerks on it. Pete
