I've had a Tekonsha Sentinel for several years now, no problems. Be sure to get a controller that can handle multiple brake axles in case you ever buy or use a larger trailer, the Sentinel will handle a quad axle trailer.

I suggest the Tekonsha Prodigy. I recently had a magnet coil to short out on one of the four wheels. The result was the brakes would go on and off due to the overload. The digital readout on the Prodigy read "short" when brakes were applied, and by jacking up one wheel at a time and turning it while watching the readout, I was able to find the bad one. I then cut the wire to that wheel and continued my trip with 3 good brakes. The method to find a bad coil on other controls is to cut the wires at each wheel until the bad one is found.

I had a Tekonsha on an 86 pickup and after a few years the motor would die when the brake was applied. Put a new unit on a 96 diesel truck and in about a year started having the same problem. Replaced it with a Kelsey and no more problems. Weird! Never did figure out what caused the problem.

Why would you want to break a trailer? Are you looking for a brake control? Learn to spell.

Joel, are you telling me there's no room on this board for typo's or a simple mistake from being a bit tired???

Go to Amazon.com and search for Prodigy. You can get one for 80 some dollars with the shipping. I have bought two of them that way.

Hi Andy,

What ever one you get, mount the BC to where it's easy reached for manual trailer sway control. Too many people hide the BC under the dash or out of the way and when you need to stop trailer sway you have to look away from your driving or can't find the BC.

I mounted mine on my 6spd shift lever as I have to apply brakes when down shifting. I use my trailer brakes alot as it's much cheaper to replace trailer brakes than truck brakes so I manualy apply them.

This brings up another problem. Some BC can not be mounted more than 70* from level. They use a pendelum to pre-sense brake stopping when you let off the fuel.

Hi Andy,

I was in the market for a first time trailer electric brake controller this Spring. I researched the available types and asked a similar question on this board. Through my own investigation and the advice given here by other users, I decided on the Tekonsha "Prodigy". I am very pleased with the result so far but have not given it a complete test yet with a fully loaded trailer. Do a search on this forum for past posts on this subject.

i set it up and have basically forgot about it. except you need to set the boost for the load you have on the trailor. just push a botton to set that. gives good readback on condition of trailor wiring. i've use it at empty and heavy loads and at high speed. i would purchase another if i needed it for anouther truck.
