Engine trouble, need direction / help

I recently purchased a 1989 Case IH 385 tractor. It has 42 hp, diesel fuel and is in decent shape. However, after having run it 4 times now I'm having trouble with the engine suddenly losing significant power. It seems that this occurs after about 2 to 2 1/2 hours of continuous use that suddenly the engine will start faltering and skipping as if it is choking. It doesn't die completely out but it just sputters from that point forward until I shut it down. Am I correct in suspecting a radiator or coolant problem, or could this possibly be related to the fuel injector pump? If it were the fuel injector pump, why would it wait 2 hours before having problems? I'm new at the tractor business and would greatly appreciate any advice / direction available from anyone. Thanks, Alan at [email protected]

I don't think the water hose is a very good idea, I own the second Dodge Cummins diesel and they advise strongly NOT to pressure wash a hot engine. A drastic change in temp. is not a good deal for any metal parts.
The tank vent, or algae, sounds like a very possible problem.
Good Luck,

Did you check the fuel tank vent? Next time it starts to loose power loosen the fuel cap. Good luck

Probably not a coolant problem, but does your temp gauge work? Sounds like a fuel problem. Like was said, change the filters, and check to make sure you have good fuel flow. Your injector pump could need rebuilding. Will the engine start when hot? Next time it sputters, take a garden hose or watering can and cool off the injector pump to see if that solves your problem. Keep us updated.

Alan, Check the fuel tank at the outlet. If it has a screen, it may be about stopped up with crud or algae. I had this problem and it too would run a while until the screen became clogged. Let sit a while and it would run again. Also, probably a good idea to change the fuel filters.

Thanks for the concern and directions. I should have mentioned in my original posting that I have changed out both fuel filters (primary and secondary) and it did seem to run smoother and a little longer the next time I worked the tractor, however it still began losing power after about 2 1/2 hours of running. I'll try the suggestion on "watering" the fuel injection pump. After the first time this loss of power happened I did let it sit for 45 minutes then re-started. It re-started fine but began losing power again after only 5-10 minutes. Again, thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Dunno enough about the Case to give specific things to look at, but in general, make sure the fuel filters are clean and the tank vent is clear.

Some one will be along with more specific recommendations soon, I'm sure.
