I started on removing some panels from a WW horse trailer but I am not certain how to attach the new pieces. I was a bit surprised to find that the old panels looks like they are just attached with caulk.
Is there a reason for this. I speculated it could be to prevent the panels from flexing or??
Can I spot weld and then use caulk or what would be the best way to do this?? The ones I replace are the 20 gauge on one side. One is a complete piece and the other I am just replacing the part of the panel under the fender.

Hi Carsten,

I would make the repair just like the factory did upon orginal assymble. Skin in applied for structual strength alot of times so it's several componets working together that makes a weight rating.

Alot of times when caulk is used that allows flex to the skin to keep it from buckling in the joint.

On commerical kictens we skin columns with SS and use caulking to fasten the SM to the column. This works very well.

I used some butyle caulk on corragated roofing lap joints and had to cut the joint with tin snips to get it apart. Some very tuff caulking.
